Tasting Notes

The 2025 Mulline Single Vineyard Modewarre Pinot Noir is an energetic, coastal Geelong red. Sourced from the Surf Coast, it offers bright aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, rose bush, and spice. The palate is concentrated and classically structured with chewy tannins and mouth-watering acidity.

Critic Scores

"Darkly fruited, with its bouquet of black plum, raspberry, rose bush and a little white pepper. A concentrated mouthful with dense, chewy tannins…” 96+ pts, Halliday Wine Companion

Vineyard Cultivation

Mulline Vintners, established in 2018 by Ben Mullen and Ben Hine, is a modern Geelong producer and Halliday Best Value Winery of the Year. This single-vineyard wine comes from the Brown Magpie Vineyard at Modewarre, on the cool Surf Coast inland from Torquay - one of Mulline's coolest, most maritime sites, planted in the early 2000s to a mix of Pinot Noir clones on sandy loam over clay and limestone. The cool exposure gives perfumed, finely structured fruit with firm natural acidity. Halliday praised the 2025 for a gorgeous, complex and pure-fruited bouquet, describing dark plum, raspberry, rose bush and white pepper over dense, chewy tannins.

Vinification

In keeping with Mulline's Modewarre releases, the clones were hand-picked and fermented in separate parcels with varying whole-bunch inclusion, using wild-yeast fermentations in open vats with twice-daily punch-downs and extended time on skins before pressing to French oak for natural malolactic fermentation and maturation with a portion of new barriques. The house style favours restraint and detail, letting the cool-site fruit lead, and the 2025 shows a concentrated, darkly fruited palate framed by dense, chewy tannins built for the cellar.
