Tasting Notes

Sourced from the Strathmore Vineyard in Sutherlands Creek—one of the warmer, drier sites in the Moorabool Valley. Planted across 1998 and 2015 to MV6 and Abel clones, the vineyard sits on grey and brown loams with fragmented granite.
Fruit was handpicked and fermented with varying levels of whole bunch across different ferments. Open
fermentations with wild yeasts included two pump-overs per day and 9 to 12 days on skins before pressing to oak for natural malolactic fermentation. The final blend includes 20% whole bunch. 30% was matured in new French oak, with the balance in seasoned puncheons and barriques. Bottled unfined and with minimal filtration.
“My favourite block of Pinot Noir that comes into the winery and there is nothing else like it in Geelong.
Interplanted clones, and hard to determine exactly what they are as the owners don’t even know, but majority of MV6 from working with this site for 5 years now. I think this makes the most exciting Pinot in the range.
Always higher acid, and really aromatic. I find 20 to 25% whole bunch fermentation on this block has worked the best and with looking at the fruit that comes off this site every year it seems to be where it always sits. The most delicate Pinot and showcases the site perfectly. Close planted and always has a very long ripening period, which gives such delicate and fine tannin, and great fruit complexity. Oak use is very much the spicy/savoury end and medium toast, and very tight grain” – Ben Mullen

Critic Scores

A single-vineyard wine planted with MV6 and Abel clones in the late '90s; 25% whole bunches. A bright, medium crimson. Whereas the '24 was quite restrained, this is beautifully fragrant from the get-go, with its bouquet of red and black fruits, bramble and lifted florals. The palate is gently mouth-filling with silky tannins that make it a pleasure to drink now but will also ensure it continues to become more complex over the next five to seven years.

Vineyard Cultivation

This Mulline single-vineyard Pinot comes from the Strathmore Vineyard at Sutherlands Creek, one of the warmer, drier sites in Geelong's Moorabool Valley. Planted across 1998 and 2015 to MV6 and Abel clones, the vineyard sits on grey and brown loams with fragmented granite. Mullen regards it as his favourite Pinot block, describing an interplanted, close-planted site with a very long ripening period that gives delicate, fine tannin and consistently higher acidity. Founded in Geelong in 2019 by Ben Mullen and Ben Hine, Mulline farms the fruit hand-picked and in parcels. In 2025 the wine showed more fragrance and lift than the restrained 2024, pointing to a bright, aromatic season on this cooler-toned block.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked and fermented with varying whole-bunch levels across separate ferments. Open fermentations ran with wild yeasts, with two pump-overs a day and nine to twelve days on skins, before pressing to oak for a natural malolactic fermentation. The final blend carried about 20-25% whole bunch, which Mullen finds suits this block best. Around 30% was matured in new French oak, the balance in seasoned puncheons and barriques, with oak chosen at the spicy-savoury, medium-toast, tight-grain end. The wine was bottled unfined and with minimal filtration. It is bright, medium crimson, gently mouth-filling with silky tannins. Halliday scored it 97 points.
