Tasting Notes

The nose is dense and intriguing, with layered black and blue berry fruits, toasted spice, cola and an ethereal floral lift. The palate is velvety and plush up front, brimming with wild berry fruits, currants, lightly roasted coffee beans and just a hint of sweet baking spice. A streak of fine acidity brightens the mid palate, blending seamlessly with a veil of powdery fine tannins to lift the palate towards a satisfyingly elegant finish.

Vineyard Cultivation

Nanny Goat Vineyard is a Central Otago producer named for the wild goats of the region's rugged terrain, drawing on fruit from this high, continental corner of New Zealand's South Island. Central Otago's semi-continental climate, with hot days, cold nights and a wide diurnal range, suits Pinot Noir, encouraging deep colour, perfume and fine structure while retaining acidity. Vineyards sit on free-draining schist and loess soils that restrict vigour and concentrate flavour. The 2024 season across Central Otago produced ripe, expressive fruit, and this bottling shows the fleshy, layered dark- and blue-berry character typical of the district, framed by fresh acidity and fine tannin.

Vinification

In keeping with quality Central Otago Pinot Noir, the fruit was fermented to build both flesh and structure, with time on skins to draw colour, perfume and fine tannin, followed by maturation in French oak barriques to add subtle spice and support ageing. The wine shows a dense, layered nose of black and blue berries, toasted spice, cola and a floral lift, with a velvety, plush entry brimming with wild berry fruit and a hint of sweet baking spice. A streak of fine acidity brightens the mid-palate and melds with powdery, fine-grained tannins to carry an elegant finish. Specific whole-bunch, oak and elevage figures for the 2024 are not published.
