The 2024 Nevis Bluff The Bluff Pinot Noir is a deeply aromatic and elegant Central Otago red with notes of dark plum, floral, clove, and toasted almond. It offers a succulent, well-structured palate with silky tannins and a harmonious, flavourful finish. This wine is best enjoyed from now through 2030.

Vineyard Cultivation

Nevis Bluff Wines is a Central Otago label produced by Dean Shaw at The Central Otago Wine Company (COWCo) in Cromwell, taking its name from the Nevis Bluff landmark in the Kawarau Gorge. 'The Bluff' is the range's approachable Pinot Noir. Central Otago's semi-continental climate, marked by warm days, cold nights and a wide diurnal range, gives deeply coloured, perfumed Pinot, while free-draining schist and loess soils keep yields modest and concentrate flavour. Shaw's long district experience informs fruit selection and site management. The 2024 season produced ripe, well-balanced Pinot fruit, and this wine offers the region's rich red- and black-fruit character with spice and dark aromatics over a lush, warm texture.

Vinification

The wine was made to show Central Otago's fruit generosity in an accessible style, with fermentation and skin contact to build colour, perfume and supple tannin, then maturation in French oak to add spice and roundness while keeping the fruit forward. It presents rich, ripe red and black fruit notes with spice and dark, brooding aromatics, followed by a lush, warm texture that makes it approachable on release. As an entry point to the Nevis Bluff range beside the single-vineyard bottling, it is built for earlier drinking. Specific whole-bunch inclusion, new-oak percentage and maturation length for this release are not publicly detailed, so exact technical figures are not stated here.
