Tasting Notes

From fortuitous beginnings in 1980, Carlos Sumarroca and his wife Nuria have built Bodegas Sumarroca into one the most important and largest entirely estate-grown organic Cava producers in the Penedes.

Originally an agronomist, selling small fruit trees around the world, a conversation with the Marques de Monistrol about the low prices paid to growers and lack of emphasis on quality, led to a gentleman’s agreement there and then to purchase the 500 hectare estate. He went about a process of removal of non-indigenous varieties from the estate, and a focus on planting native varietals, with a view never to compete with the large volume wineries, but instead to work with a focus on high-quality production and environmental management. Practicing sustainable viticulture, they are also certified by the internationally recognised Biosphere Sustainable certificate, supported by UNESCO, and strive to work with as little impact on the local ecology, and in ways to support the local economy. This includes the repopulation of native fauna on the farm, the installation of hives and protected areas for bats, as well as investment in efforts to eliminate the use of fossil fuels for energy. If that wasn’t enough they make sublime Cavas, continue to impress with their innovation, and embody the philosophy of passion for the land.

This is a cava that offers a complex aromatic range and sweetened by the 60 month minimum aging process in stacks and fermentation of the base wine in French oak barrels.

Very intense and complex aroma. A mix of fruity notes of varietal chardonnay with light, varietal roasts and all on a bed of notes from being aged in barrels. The palate is very structured and tasty, dominated by the fruitiness of the wine with a very interesting vanilla scent. In the mouth it’s refreshing and mineral.

Critic Scores

Spectacular aromas of green apple, lemon, and quince with a toasted limestone touch that gracefully glides over the impeccable mousse and vibrant seam of acidity. Full of varietal charm and character, with plenty of life ahead.

Vineyard Cultivation

Núria Claverol is the premium cava range of the Sumarroca family in the Penedès, Catalonia, its name a homage to the family matriarch, which the Homenatge (rendered 'Homnetage' on some listings) cuvee makes explicit. This wine is built on Xarel-lo, the great indigenous white of the Penedès and cava's structural backbone, grown on the family's organically farmed estate vineyards. Xarel-lo thrives on the region's limestone and clay soils and its inland, altitude-tempered Mediterranean climate, delivering firm acidity, phenolic grip and ageing capacity. The 2016 season in the Penedès was generally favourable, giving ripe, healthy Xarel-lo well suited to extended Gran Reserva maturation. Careful low-yield, sustainable viticulture and hand selection reflect the estate's terroir-driven intent.

Vinification

Xarel-lo is hand-picked and gently pressed, with the base wine fermented to preserve its savoury, herb-and-orchard character before a second fermentation in bottle by the traditional method. As a Gran Reserva cava the wine ages on its lees for at least thirty months, and typically well beyond, building fine, persistent bubbles and toasty, nutty, patisserie complexity over Xarel-lo's structured, mineral core. It is then riddled, disgorged and finished to a brut level. The style is a serious, food-oriented cava with grip, length and autolytic depth. Exact lees duration and final dosage for this release were not individually confirmed and are flagged for verification.
