Critic Scores

A lovely expression of the variety, the fragrant bouquet shows blackcurrant, brown spice, thyme, and roasted nut aromas. The palate delivers good weight, succulent fruit intensity, and silky texture, leading to a well-structured, robust finish. At its best: now to 2034.

Deep crimson with purple edges, hinting at its youthful energy. On the nose, lifted aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, and ripe plum are complemented by subtle notes of mint, cedar, and dark chocolate. The palate is medium to full-bodied with juicy black fruits at its core, framed by fine, dusty tannins typical of Coonawarra Cabernet. Hints of tobacco leaf, mocha, and spice add complexity, while a touch of oak provides lively structure.
The finish is smooth and persistent, balancing freshness with a gentle savoury edge.
Vino Masters Score: 92 / 100
★★★★ A polished and reliable Cabernet that showcases Penley Estate’s modern yet regionally faithful style.

About this Wine

Penley Estate

"Penley Estate is one of the finest Coonawarra producers, fashioning wines of greater richness, nuance and aging potential than most of their peers." - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate

A Five Star rated winery in James Halliday's Wine Companion, Penley Estate was established in 1988. Founder Kym Tolley is a storied winemaker and member of both the Tolley and the Penfolds families - two of Australia's pioneering wine families.

In their 19 years of operation, Penley Estate has amassed a huge collection of awards that includes 48 trophies and over 150 gold medals, and the brand itself has become synonymous with Coonawarra Cabernet.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
