Tasting Notes

The Pieropan Soave Classico DOC is a white wine (Garganega 85%, Trebbiano di Soave 15%) produced by the Pieropan winery in the Soave Classico region of Veneto, Italy. It is made from Garganega grapes, with a small percentage of Trebbiano di Soave. The grapes are grown on volcanic soils at an altitude of 100-300 meters above sea level. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled cement tanks and then aged for several months in the same tanks.

It's a fresh, elegant wine with a pale straw yellow color. It has aromas of white flowers, citrus fruits, and a hint of minerality. The palate is dry, with a crisp acidity and a long, mineral finish. The wine is best enjoyed young, with seafood dishes, pasta, or simply on its own.

Critic Scores

Perfumed wine with citrus and minerality, forthright, intense and focused. Medium-bodied, vibrant and savory, it displays super-cool freshness and weight, with a polished finish. One of the top Italian whites for quality-per-price ratio. Drink now.

Vineyard Cultivation

Pieropan is a benchmark Soave estate founded in the town of Soave in 1880, now in its fourth generation and long associated with elevating the appellation's reputation. The Classico bottling draws on estate and grower parcels within the historic Soave Classico zone east of Verona, planted principally to Garganega with a small share of Trebbiano di Soave. Vines sit on the hillside's volcanic basalt and tufaceous limestone soils, which lend the wine its characteristic minerality. Farming follows organic-certified practice with the pergola veronese training traditional to the area. The 2024 season across the Veneto was cooler and later than the run of warm recent vintages, favouring measured ripening and bright natural acidity in the Garganega.

Vinification

Grapes are hand-picked and gently pressed, with the free-run and lighter press fractions retained. Fermentation is carried out with a long, cool cycle in temperature-controlled stainless steel and cement tanks rather than oak, preserving fruit purity and the wine's saline, mineral thread. The wine then rests on its fine lees in the same neutral vessels for several months before bottling, building gentle texture and breadth without imparting wood character. No new oak is used, and malolactic conversion is generally avoided to retain the crisp citrus line. The house style aims at a dry, precise Soave built for freshness in youth while carrying the structure to develop over several years in bottle.

About this Wine

Veneto

Veneto in the north east of Italy, is the 8th largest region in Italy in terms of land mass, and over 90,000 hectares are under vine, of which some 35,000 hectares are DOC, making Veneto the largest producer of DOC wines in Italy. Venetian viticulture dates back to the Roman times, but phylloxera and world wars saw large cooperatives come to the region taking over many smaller vineyards.

The region is protected from the harsh European climate by the Alps, in the north of Veneto, though the cool climate there is ideal for producing Garganega, the main variety in the white wine Soave. To the east, along the Adriatic coast the renowned Valpolicella, Amarone and Bardolino DOC reds are produced. Reds are often blended with multiple grapes although straight varietals like Cabernet Franc can be very enjoyable.

The plains of Piave produce vast quantities of wine, rather than necessarily producing the highest quality wines and up in the Conegliano hills to the north is home to the Prosecco variety, which is growing in popularity, seen as a bargain alternative to Champagne.
