Pierre Gonon farmed some of the best slopes of Mauves, in the very heart—and the historical birthplace—of the Saint-Joseph appellation.

In 1988, he turned direction of the property over to his sons, Jean and Pierre. This friendly, talented team of brothers has since earned a reputation as the domaine of Saint-Joseph.

Tasting Notes

The Gonon’s are firmly entrenched in the top handful of names in the Rhone Valley these days due to their diligent, manual organic vineyard work, rows ploughed by their trusty plough horse Samson, to their meticulous work in the winery and careful aging in seasoned barrels of various formats - from 100 year old Foudres to demi-muids to Burgundian Pieces.

Critic Scores

Saturated ruby. Expressive blackberry, exotic spice, peony and smoky mineral scents show very sharp delineation and pick up a hint of olive with air. Sappy, spice-laced dark berry and bitter cherry flavors display very good depth and a complementary hint of candied flowers that emerges on the back half. Broad and pliant in style, finishing with strong, floral- and spice-dominated persistence and rounded tannins that contribute gentle grip.

Loganberries and raspberries with red plums, pepper, spice and dark, stony minerals. The palate has a deep-set, fleshy core of rich plums and plenty of tannins. Dark chocolate and black cherries to finish. Plenty to offer here. Drink or hold.

Vineyard Cultivation

Pierre Gonon represents a multi-generational Saint-Joseph family enterprise on the steep, granitic right-bank terraces of the northern Rhône. The Gonon family has long championed organic and biodynamic viticulture, working their vines with minimal chemical input and deep seasonal attention. Les Iles Feray is a single-vineyard selection from mature vines planted on decomposed granite (schist), lending mineral linearity to the wine. The 2017 vintage in the Saint-Joseph appellation saw a warm spring leading to early bud-break, a dry summer with moderate heat spikes, and an extended, cool-finish ripening phase. These conditions preserved acidity while allowing phenolic development, ideal for the appellation's fresh yet structured Syrah style.

Vinification

Hand-harvested grapes underwent partial destemming, retaining some stems to enhance natural tannin structure. The fruit fermented naturally with native yeasts in concrete and neutral oak vessels, a traditional approach that emphasises terroir expression over winemaking intervention. A prolonged post-fermentation maceration (typically 2–3 weeks) drew additional complexity from the skins. The wine was aged in neutral oak and large-format foudre for approximately 12–14 months, allowing maturation without new-oak tannin overlay. Minimal sulphur addition preserved the wine's delicate phenolic character.
