Tasting Notes

In the words of Jeremy Oliver, “Pierro is one of the few Australian wineries that could claim to have established a trend that many others have followed. Since the mid 1980’s Mike Peterkin has crafted a chardonnay of not only monumental power, but of simultaneously smooth and silky delivery”.

“Stylistically, the Pierro Chardonnay feels immune to the trends that have buffeted this grape in Australia over the years, and the persistence of the expression of this site in combination with the house style has been impressive to witness.” Erin Larkin

The Pierro ‘style’ was first made in 1986 and refined with every subsequent vintage. Mike had initially intended to specialise in Riesling on his Willyabrup plot, so it was a tad fortuitous that Chardonnay became Pierro's most famous wine. His vine supplier had been let down on a large order of Chardonnay rootstock, approximately 5000 cuttings, and offered them to Mike at a cut price. In order to help out his friend he agreed to take them. It was an inspired decision.

Today the Pierro is regarded as one of the finest Chardonnays in the region. Seeing as Margaret River is indisputably Australia!s premier Chardonnay producing region, this is a major honour.

This is a wine of great finesse yet impressive power, tight structure yet generosity of flavour. Ripe melony, peachy characters yet noticeable restraint and subtlety. An unctuous mouth-feel yet with taut, fine acidity on the finish. It will start to be at its best about June 2025 and will continue to mature gracefully for another 10 years. An ideal accompaniment to seafood and white meat dishes. Ideal cellaring temperature is a constant 14-16 degrees celsius.

Critic Scores

From one of Margaret River’s great chardonnay producers, this is yet another brilliant example of the style that has made Pierro so admired. You wouldn’t guess it came from a warm year—it’s delicate and fine, with a pristine brightness. The nose shows light grapefruit, citrus, a touch of butterscotch, and a subtle mealy note in the background. The palate has real zing, with lively, pristine acidity driving through to a sustained finish. A chalky, minerally edge adds to the linear feel and precision. Another outstanding Pierro chardonnay.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2024 Margaret River vintage represents a moderate-warmth year with variable spring moisture and a steady ripening period. Pierro's Chardonnay vineyards benefited from natural spring irrigation via good soil water reserves and occasional early-summer rainfall, maintaining vine vigour without excess. The gravelly loam and limestone subsoil of the estate parcels provided the mineral expression and pH balance that Margaret River's cooler sub-regions are prized for. Budburst was timely, flowering untroubled, and the ripening phase extended through March, allowing gradual phenolic and aromatic development. Yields remained moderate, preserving concentration. The 2024 growing conditions favoured elegant, balanced Chardonnay rather than overripe power.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed immediately, capturing juice without solids. Cold settling clarified the must before inoculation with selected yeast strains, ensuring clean fermentation in French oak. The 2024 wine was aged in approximately 50% new French oak and 50% neutral vessels, a balance that allows oak integration without overwhelming the fruit's cool-climate minerality. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in barrel over the autumn months. The wine spent 11 months on fine lees with periodic stirring, developing complexity and weight. Bottling occurred with minimal fining agents and natural clarification.
