Tasting Notes

The Vintage Reserve ‘VR’ is the best barrel selection of all Cabernet Sauvignon from Pierro. Only produced in exceptional vintages.

87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc

Hand picked, chilled, hand sorted, destemmed and then individually berry sorted by hand. Matured in French oak – 60% new – for 18 months. Blackcurrant, redcurrant, blueberry, plum, Chinese five spice, chocolate, bay leaf. Elegant palate defined by silky tannins. Cellar for 20+ years

Critic Scores

Oh gosh, this is a seriously impressive ‘19 cabernet. Peterkin has used a small amount of petit verdot presumably to get some acid support. The palate is such a complex weave of blackcurrant, gamey meats and rich syrupy chocolate. Fine tannins with a chalky seashell minerality hold it to its line as it extends to its very long finish. Seamless with great power and supreme poise

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Pierro's Vineyard Reserve (VR) Cabernet Sauvignon draws from the estate's most carefully selected parcels, planted on well-draining gravelly loam over limestone subsoil typical of Margaret River's finest Cabernet terroirs. These vines benefit from the region's afternoon maritime cooling influence, which tempers ripening and preserves natural acidity—essential for balance in premium Cabernet. The 2019 vintage was a warm year, particularly in early ripening, with a mild summer and steady heat through autumn, producing ripe but structured Cabernet fruit. Lower yields on these premium parcels concentrated flavour development, and late-march ripening allowed optimal physiological maturity. The warm vintage favoured deep colour and ripe tannin development, whilst Margaret River's cool nights maintained fresh acidity.

Vinification

The VR Cabernet was hand-selected and destemmed into temperature-controlled fermentation vessels. A combination of native and cultured yeasts drove controlled extraction, with extended maceration (approximately 3 weeks) on skins building tannin structure and colour depth. Post-fermentation settling clarified the wine before oak ageing. The 2019 vintage spent approximately 18 months in French oak (typically 70% new, 30% neutral), allowing gradual integration of oak tannins with fruit tannins. A soft rack-and-return during oak maturation enhanced integration. Natural settling rather than fining prior to bottling preserved the wine's substance and ageability.
