Tasting Notes

Place of Changing Winds is a vineyard in the Macedon Ranges area of Victoria that grows Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as producing two Heathcote Syrahs from a single plot of vines. It is a blend of the two styles of red we produce: declassified Estate Pinot Noir blended with Heathcote Syrah. It's a homage to these styles. The name is a little joke but it also nods to the pioneer of blending Syrah with Pinot, Hunter legend Maurice O'Shea. Simply, the POCW team trialled the blend, loved it and so bottled it. With the two varieties providing a great foil for one another, you can expect lots of crunchy red fruits, some rose-like hints, bright, peppery freshness and a long, tangy close.

Here is 60% syrah from Heathcote and Harcourt with a bolstering remainder of pinot noir. A variety of vessels cajole the wine to bottle. This feels meaty and sleek in the same breath. A whiff of woody spices and undergrowth before a compote of forest berries with a high note of tart cherry. Similar to taste, a sluice of fine, grainy tannin in tow, on medium weight and very persistent. It’s a slurpier red with plenty of charisma and high drinkability.

It’s not heavy but there’s impressive intensity of flavour here. It tastes of sheer plum, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and sweet cherry, with woodsy spice and cedarwood characters as part of the veneer. There’s texture, there’s twigs, there’s pure, perfectly ripened fruit, and there’s a firm stamp of integrated tannin. There’s some char to the aftertaste, which is not a distraction and is not a negative. There’s a lot to delve into here. It’s excellent.

Vineyard Cultivation

Made by Robert Walters at his Macedon Ranges estate, Tradition Red is produced only in suitable years and takes its cue from the Syrah-Pinot blends of Hunter Valley legend Maurice O'Shea in the 1940s and 1950s. The 2022 draws Pinot Noir from the estate's high-density Macedon vines, grown on cool, elevated volcanic and clay soils, and blends it with Syrah sourced from the warmer inland Victorian districts of Heathcote and Harcourt. This spread of sites balances the cool-climate perfume and acidity of the home vineyard against riper, spicier Shiraz fruit, giving a medium-weight, aromatic style rather than a heavy red.

Vinification

The blend is around 40 per cent estate Pinot Noir and 60 per cent Syrah from Heathcote and Harcourt, the varieties handled across a range of vessels. It spent its first year in a mix of large and small oak, mostly neutral, so the wood added texture rather than flavour, with a final phase of ageing in stainless-steel tank and a 600-litre Stockinger cask to keep the fruit bright and the tannins fine and grainy. It was bottled at the end of November 2023, aiming for a perfumed, juicy, savoury red that drinks well young but will hold.
