Pooley was established in 1985 when the family planted 10 rows of Riesling & 7 rows of Pinot Noir on their property at Coal River in Southern Tasmania

A blend of Cooinda Vale, Butcher’s Hill and select parcels from the Coal River Valley. Fruit was handpicked and cooled overnight to 5 degrees.

An enticing wine from the first sniff; jasmine, grapefruit & white flowers on the nose, while the palate reveals lavender, lime zest, green apple & fennel. Seductive stuff.

Tasting Notes

Opening with candied orange zest and mandarin the clean acidity revitalises the palate and clears the way for lime cordial, apple sherbet, dry honeysuckle and white jasmine to finish off this outstanding cool-climate riesling.

Critic Scores

Delicate notes of spiced nectarines, fennel, crushed rocks and lime zest lead into a taut palate. The core is simmering with energy, fine chewy phenolics add scaffolding to the intense palate. This is seamless and flowing, an extraordinarily youthful riesling. The pedigreed fruit is allowed to shine through, thanks to judicious winemaking." - Gabrielle Poy

Vineyard Cultivation

Pooley Wines is a family-owned Coal River Valley producer in southern Tasmania, established in 1985 when the family planted their first rows of Riesling and Pinot Noir. This estate Riesling blends fruit from the Cooinda Vale and Butcher's Hill vineyards with select Coal River parcels. The valley's cool, dry, sunny climate and sandstone- and dolerite-influenced soils suit Riesling, producing fruit of intense citrus and mineral character with bright acidity. In the 2024 vintage the fruit was handpicked and cooled overnight to around five degrees to preserve aromatics and freshness ahead of pressing.

Vinification

The chilled bunches were whole-bunch pressed and the juice cold-settled before a slow, cool fermentation in stainless steel to retain delicate aromatics. Made in a dry style with no oak and no malolactic, the wine keeps fine, chewy phenolic texture from careful handling of the pressings. It was bottled young under screwcap to preserve its taut, energetic line, spiced-nectarine and lime-zest fruit and crushed-rock minerality - an extraordinarily youthful Riesling praised for its seamless flow.
