Tasting Notes

The Steinert Shiraz is the epitome of the beauty and grace of the Eden Valley. It's perfume is beautifully complex, displaying dried herbs and spices, lifted florals, dark cherries, red currants, charcuterie meats and smoked wood. The palate is supple but refined, with a firm backbone of fine grained tannins providing the framework for a kaleidoscope of flavours. It sings with dark fruits accompanied by thyme, lavender, cedar and cloves, finishing with a crescendo of soft, powdery tannins.

Powell & Son wines are sourced from various vineyard sites throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Callum and Dave Powell employ traditional, minimalist winemaking techniques to produce a wine that speaks of the place that it was grown. Their inspiration for winemaking having its roots in France’s Rhone Valley, Powell & Son red wines are made from the classic Rhone varietals: Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro and its whites: Roussanne, Marsanne as well as Eden Valley Riesling. The Powell philosophy is that a great wine is made in the vineyard and so Callum and Dave work the vineyards they use on their own in the Winter and Spring seasons, then in Autumn pick the fruit and vinify using old concrete ferment vats and basket pressing – producing unique and expressive wines from their most prized vineyards throughout the Barossa.

Critic Scores

Coming from very old, dry farmed vines planted in a cooler part of the Barossa (Eden Valley), the 2016 Shiraz Steinert is a legendary wine in the making. This beauty boasts a deep ruby/purple-hued color as well as a cool-climate-like array of red and black currants, dried flowers, incense, salted meats, and exotic, peppery spices. Hitting the palate with full-bodied richness, this is a wine of incredible richness and depth paired with remarkable elegance and purity. With integrated acidity, a sensational texture, and a finish that won’t quit, this tour de force in Shiraz can be enjoyed today or cellared for two decades. Bravo!

Priced in the same ballpark as another Eden Valley Shiraz icon, the Powells' 2016 Steinert Shiraz deserves to be mentioned in that same class. Sourced from the cooler Flaxman Valley portion of the region from vines more than 120 years old, it boasts complex aromas of garrigue, baking spices, black cherries and raspberries. It's full-bodied, creamy-textured and rich, with echoes of red fruit and wet stone on the nearly endless finish.

Vineyard Cultivation

Powell & Son's 2016 'Steinert' Shiraz comes from the same Flaxman's Valley vineyard block as the preceding 2015 release, representing continuity of site-specific expression across consecutive vintages. The 2016 growing season in Eden Valley was notably warm compared to 2015, resulting in slightly riper fruit development whilst Eden Valley's elevation (400–600 metres) and natural acidity maintained balance. The volcanic soils and mineral-driven terroir of Flaxman's Valley persist as key influences on the wine's character, contributing crisp acidity and peppery structure beneath riper fruit expression.

Vinification

The warmer 2016 vintage influenced fermentation dynamics compared to 2015. Temperature-controlled fermentation (20–24°C) proceeded with attention to achieving balanced tannin extraction given the vintage's higher sugar levels. Maceration continued for 8–10 days, developing colour and phenolic maturity. French oak maturation of 14–18 months—a mix of new and neutral cooperage—added complexity and spice without overwhelming the fruit. Malolactic fermentation in barrel softened acidity inherited from the vintage, developing rounder mid-palate structure than vintage-cooler 2015.

About this Wine

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
