Tasting Notes

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Montestefano Riserva 2014 represents the pinnacle of Barbaresco craftsmanship, showcasing an exceptional vintage from one of the most celebrated vineyards in Piedmont. This Riserva is renowned for its robust structure and remarkable concentration, making it a standout expression of Nebbiolo's noble character. Sourced from a premium private cellar, the 2014 Montestefano offers a rare opportunity to experience a wine that is both powerfully intense and elegantly refined.

Crafted for longevity, this Riserva is built to age gracefully over decades, evolving complex layers of aromas and flavors while maintaining its depth and vibrancy. The 2014 vintage benefited from ideal weather conditions in the Barbaresco region, delivering grapes with perfect ripeness and balanced acidity. This ensures an ideal framework for aging, enhancing the wine’s tannic structure and aromatic development.

The wine opens with expressive notes of ripe cherries, wild raspberries, and subtle hints of rose petals and dried herbs. On the palate, it reveals a full-bodied profile with firm, velvety tannins and a mineral-driven finish that lingers elegantly. This refined balance of power and finesse highlights the unique terroir of Montestefano, known for its stony soils and optimal sun exposure.

Produttori del Barbaresco’s commitment to traditional winemaking techniques combined with meticulous vineyard management results in a Riserva that truly honors its heritage. The 2014 Montestefano embodies the essence of Barbaresco’s prestigious reputation, offering an exquisite taste experience that rewards patience and discerning palates.

Ideal for collectors and connoisseurs seeking a premium Barbaresco, this Riserva pairs beautifully with rich dishes such as roasted game, truffle-infused risotto, and aged cheeses, enhancing its complex flavor profile.

Critic Scores

Forest floor, red-skinned berry, leather and tobacco aromas mingle with a balsamic note. The focused, structured palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, raspberry compote and licorice while a graphite note backs up the finish. A backbone of fine-grained tannins and bright acidity gives it an age-worthy structure. Drink 2021–2034.

One of the many highlights in this range, the Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is superb. A big enrobing wine, the Montestefano wraps around the palate with stunning depth. Today, the Montestefano is utterly embryonic, and yet it exudes depth, resonance and pure class. The Montestefano is one of the more complete wines in the range because of the way it deftly balances fruit intensity and structure. Readers will have to be patient, though. 95+

Pure cherry flavors permeate the rich flesh of this red, backed by vibrant acidity and fine tannins. Eucalyptus, earth and tar elements add depth as this cruises to a lingering finish. Fine intensity. Best from 2021 through 2040.

This is visibly the darkest in color and concentration of this series of wines from the well-known Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative. The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano offers round and supple fruit with dark cherry, blackberry and some easy spice. Once again, the wine is a bit flatter than I had hoped, lacking that extra level of snappy freshness.

Produttori enthusiasts will be happy to know that the estate's celebrated Riservas were made in 2014, a vintage that performed very nicely in the rolling hills of Barbaresco. We can also look forward to the Riservas in 2015 and 2016. I find it helpful to remember the tasting order of the Riservas as suggested by General Manager Aldo Vacca. It starts with the more delicate expressions and concludes with the most structured wines.

Mid ruby and a shade brighter than the Montefico. Subtle peppery strawberry and raspberry but not really open yet. Compact and tightly built with lively succulent red fruit on a big foundation of formidable, majestic tannins. Long, precise and powerful yet contained. 18/20 points.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2014 growing season in Piedmont presented a cooler, longer ripening window, which suited Nebbiolo's slow maturation and complex phenolic development. Montestefano's calcareous soils and northeast exposure provided ideal conditions for achieving balance between fruit ripeness and acidity. Produttori del Barbaresco's member viticulturists maintained balanced canopies to manage the cooler conditions, ensuring optimal grape maturity by harvest. The limestone-rich terroir contributed mineral definition and the structure characteristic of fine Barbaresco. The 2014 vintage is recognised for producing elegant, refined wines with excellent ageing potential.

Vinification

Nebbiolo from Montestefano was hand-harvested and destemmed, then fermented in temperature-controlled tanks with native yeast. The extended maceration period—approximately four weeks in the cooler 2014 vintage—allowed thorough extraction of colour and tannin. Malolactic conversion occurred naturally in large, neutral oak vessels. The wine subsequently aged in traditional large botti for three years, the extended élevage allowing the vintage's natural acidity to integrate and secondary complexity to develop. Minimal intervention and absence of new oak preserve the vintage's elegance and terroir expression.
