Critic Scores

The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja is a big, dark wine loaded with dark fruit, menthol, tar, flowers, mint, rosemary and an array of balsamic notes that develop in the glass. The Rabaja possesses stunning depth to match its muscular tannins. It is a dazzling wine endowed with tons of inner perfume and sheer personality as it saturates the palate from start to finish. Today, the Rabaja comes across as huge and almost Barolo like, but it has plenty of Rabaja character. Purists will want to age the wine for a number of years to allow the baby fruit to drop off, but the truth is, it is pretty stunning even today.

Good full red. Reticent but very pure nose opens to reveal cherry, plum, spices, mocha and smoke. Broad, concentrated and deep but very young and inexpressive today. This seriously thick, layered Barbaresco displays very good definition and finishes with excellent length and energy.

Along with Asili and Santo Stefano, Rabaja is Barbaresco's best vineyard. Bigger, fleshier but less mineral wines than the more aristocratic Asili. Has energy, spice and lift.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Rabaja stands among Barbaresco's most celebrated vineyard crus, managed by Produttori del Barbaresco's cooperative structure since 1958. The vineyard's Tortonian-age calcareous marl and chalk-influenced soils impart a distinctive mineral character to Nebbiolo, contributing the wine's ageability and structural definition. The 2007 growing season in Piedmont was marked by warm conditions and successful fruit maturation, producing Nebbiolo with concentrated flavours and balanced alcohol levels. Now nearly two decades old, the 2007 Rabaja Riserva exemplifies the vintage's ability to develop complexity through extended cellaring.

Vinification

Traditional Barbaresco vinification methods governed harvest through fermentation: Nebbiolo grapes were destemmed and fermented with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled conditions. Skin contact extended over several weeks to extract the tannins foundational to long-term development. Malolactic fermentation occurred within large wooden barrels (tini), where the wine aged for the minimum two years required by DOCG regulations, extended significantly beyond this for Riserva status. The protocol emphasises terroir preservation over wood manipulation, allowing the 2007 Rabaja to express its site character across two decades of bottle development.
