Tasting Notes

Quintessa, a " Cru" in the heart of Napa Valley Hidden in the heart of Rutherford, Quintessa is a 280-acre site that reflects a diversity of geology, biodiversity, exposures and microclimates. Inspired by this distinct property, founders Agustin and Valeria Huneeus believed that it was destined to become one of the world’s great wine estates. Today, a total of 160 acres are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carménère on 26 vineyard blocks. Each block is farmed— organically and biodynamically —harvested, and vinified individually to preserve and enhance the nuances of the land. Inspired by the land’s natural grandeur, the Huneeus family dedicated themselves to capturing the beauty and harmony of this land in the form of a great wine. The 2019 vintage The 2019 Quintessa celebrates the precision and nuance of a vintage that reflects the full complexity of our estate. It is an expression of Quintessa in a graceful growing season, yielding a wine of transparency and depth—full of flavor, while also energizing and persistent. After a graceful start of the season, spring temperatures remained cool through May, which slowed the emergence of bloom on the vine. This slight delay allowed for an ideal fruit-set. Temperatures warmed slightly in summer, encouraging an even arc of ripening while maintaining vibrant acidity. The season gave us a well-paced and steady harvest period. Tasting note “The 2019 Quintessa offers nuance, depth, and great persistence. A complex of flower, forest, fruit, and earth notes harmonize with fine-grained tannin and vibrant acidity. It is a wine of precision as well as transparency. The 2019 Quintessa will drink well now for those who prefer a youthful expression but will also last in cellar for at least another twenty years for those who enjoy the complexities of age.” 2019 vintage in video: https://bit.ly/Quintessa2019

Critic Scores

The 2018 Red Wine is a powerful, driving Napa Valley wine. Scorched earth, iron, chocolate, and leather give the red cherry/plum fruit distinctly savory accents. This is an especially tight wine in a vintage that yielded generally more supple, open-knit reds. Quintessa is one of the first Napa Valley estates I visited, many years ago. Since then, the property has undergone several stylistic phases. It will be interesting to see where things go over the next handful of years here. Drink 2023 - 2038.

This is beautifully polished with firm, dusty tannins to the blue fruit, as well as chocolate and cedar character. Some much earthier character, too, from mushrooms to bark. Forest flowers. Perfumed. It’s full-bodied with round tannins and a soft, creamy finish. Some iron and iodine to this. So attractive at the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Better after 2023.

Vineyard Cultivation

Quintessa is a single, contiguous 280-acre estate in the heart of Rutherford, Napa Valley, founded by Agustin and Valeria Huneeus in 1990. Around 160 acres are planted across 26 blocks that span varied geology, exposures and microclimates, to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenere. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, with each block worked, harvested and vinified individually. The 2019 growing season began gently, with cool spring temperatures through May that slowed bloom and encouraged an even fruit-set; a moderately warm summer drove steady ripening while preserving acidity, and a well-paced harvest followed. The estate describes the vintage as graceful and precise.

Vinification

Fruit from each block is harvested and vinified separately to preserve site nuance before the final assemblage. In the gravity-flow winery, the biodynamically grown grapes are fermented and the wine is matured in French oak, the components kept apart until blending builds the estate's classic Rutherford red, led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenere. The 2019 emphasises transparency and persistence, with fine-grained tannin and vibrant acidity framing a savoury, floral-and-forest character. The wine is built both for youthful drinking and for two decades or more of cellaring.
