Tasting Notes

An exceptional 'Second' wine from Victorian producer Yabby Lake.

Winemaker Tom Carson was crowned 'International Winemaker of the Year' at the 2004 International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. Tom Carson also holds several wine judging roles including his current post as Chairman of the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards. Previously, Tom was the youngest Chairman to preside at The National Wine Show in Canberra, and over the years he has judged at a number of capital city and regional shows, and sat on the Qantas Wine Panel from 2004 until 2015.

Red Claw wines are hand crafted with fruit from Yabby Lake’s own vineyards. The wines are made following the same principles that guide the single vineyard wines. With Red Claw the emphasis is on making wines that are bright, juicy and more expressive when young – lending them perfectly to the Australian lifestyle and the way we like to dine. Perfumed, fragrant aromas are dominated by cherry and dark berry fruits complemented by a touch of spice and underlying French oak. The long, silky palate has a lovely elegance and velvety texture, with concentrated red fruit flavours and a finely poised finish.

Vineyard Cultivation

Red Claw is the second label of Yabby Lake, the acclaimed Mornington Peninsula producer, and this Pinot Noir is hand-crafted from fruit off Yabby Lake's own Peninsula vineyards. The Mornington Peninsula's maritime cool climate, with sea breezes and free-draining soils, suits Pinot Noir grown for perfume and finesse. Red Claw follows the same viticultural principles as the estate's single-vineyard wines but is picked and styled to be bright, juicy and expressive when young. The 2025 vintage is a current release; detailed growing-season notes are still emerging, but the Peninsula's cooler recent seasons typically deliver fragrant, well-balanced fruit. Careful vineyard management underpins the fresh, approachable house style.

Vinification

In keeping with Yabby Lake's methods, the fruit is hand-picked and gently handled, with fermentation aimed at bright, primary fruit expression rather than heavy structure. A portion of whole bunches and small-batch open fermentation are typical of the range, followed by maturation in French oak, only a modest proportion new, to add subtle spice and support without masking the wine's cherry and dark-berry fruit. Malolactic fermentation and a relatively short elevage keep the wine fresh, silky and velvety, ready to drink young. The emphasis throughout is on perfume, juiciness and a finely poised finish suited to early enjoyment. Exact 2025 whole-bunch and oak details are unconfirmed.
