Tasting Notes

The farm voice of a distinct parcel of land: Rippon. On the western board of Roy’s Bay, Lake Wānaka, Rippon’s north-facing escarpment forms the meeting point of terminal moraines and coarse gravels, all based in schist, on which some of the region’s earliest vines were planted. Rippon is a wine issued from all of the fully developed Pinot Noir vines growing in this land.

Critic Scores

Deeply fragrant and perfumed, this offers aromas of wild strawberries, dark cherries, violets, lead pencil and potpourri. The refined and pure palate has finely integrated tannins, bright acidity and a generous texture, giving notes of raspberries, blood oranges, forest floor and bark. Firmly structured with a savory undertone. Pure sophistication, showing a soft touch in the vineyard and winery. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir came from a warmer vintage, and it leads with abundant red fruit, exotic spice and a profusion of waxy, chalky tannin in the mouth. As usual, this is one of the highlights of the wine for me; the texture carries the delicate fruit, like a paper boat bobbing down the stream, without which, the boat would have no movement or flow. Perhaps the warmer year has imbued the wine with more "stuffing," yet it retains its mineral clarity and poise regardless. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Vineyard Cultivation

Rippon sits on the western shore of Lake Wanaka in Central Otago, farmed by the Mills family since first plantings in 1982 by Rolfe and Lois Mills. The Mature Vine bottling draws on the oldest, ungrafted own-rooted schist blocks, worked biodynamically and certified organic, with the lake moderating the diurnal swings of this cool, elevated site. Grasses, composts and animals form part of a closed farm system rather than added inputs. The 2022 season ran warmer than the estate's norm, ripening the fruit a little more fully while the glacial schist and quartz soils held on to the mineral tension and freshness that mark Rippon's reds.

Vinification

Fruit is hand-picked and fermented with indigenous yeasts in the gravity-fed winery, with a proportion of whole bunches and gentle hand-plunging in open vessels to draw out perfume and fine tannin rather than extraction. The 2022 was raised for around sixteen months in French oak, a modest share of it new, then bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulphur, in keeping with the estate's low-intervention approach. Alcohol is a restrained 13.5% and the wine is sealed under Diam. The result is textural and savoury, its chalky, waxy tannin carrying delicate red fruit without weight.
