Tasting Notes

The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. The fruit is sourced from various sub-appellations within the Napa Valley, each selected for their unique qualities that contribute to the overall blend, and it's expression of the region. About half of the grapes are from Oakville, known for deep, well-drained soils that create rich, smooth wines with gentle tannins. Other parts of the blend come from Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll, Yountville, and Rutherford. This wine aims to capture the essence of the Napa Valley.

Critic Scores

Lovely cabernet notes of bell pepper, blackcurrants, blackberry leaves and cassis, together with some cocoa powder. I like the freshness. Medium body and creamy, powdery tannins. Juicy and extremely drinkable. 80% cabernet sauvignon, the rest merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and some malbec. Drink from 2023.

The base 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is certainly impressive, and since there are roughly 90,000 cases, it’s an incredible achievement. Classic darker currants, tobacco leaf, truffly earth, and spicy oak all define the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length. Based off 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, buy a case and enjoy bottles over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2022 - 2037.

Vineyard Cultivation

Robert Mondavi Winery, founded in Oakville in 1966, is one of Napa Valley's landmark estates and among the best-known Cabernet producers in the world. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a large-volume, multi-appellation blend of around 90,000 cases, drawing fruit from across the valley, with roughly half from Oakville and further parcels in Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll, Yountville and Rutherford, each chosen for a particular contribution. Soils range from Oakville's deep, well-drained gravels to bench and alluvial sites elsewhere. The 2019 growing season was a benchmark Napa vintage: a wet winter replenished reserves, followed by an even, temperate summer and a long, unhurried ripening that yielded balanced, structured Cabernet.

Vinification

Sourced from many sites, the components were fermented separately before blending. The 2019 was assembled as 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. In Mondavi's classic Napa style, the reds were fermented and then matured in French oak, the multi-appellation blend built to be approachable on release yet capable of a decade or more in bottle. Careful sub-appellation selection and moderate extraction give ripe but supple tannins, balance and length; critics have noted classic currant, tobacco-leaf and spicy-oak character.
