Tasting Notes

Rockford Cane Cut Semillon 2008 375ml is a superbly crafted dessert wine hailing from the renowned Barossa Valley, a region celebrated for its warm climate and exceptional grape-growing conditions. Created by one of the valley’s most respected traditional wineries, this wine exemplifies a deep commitment to preserving classic Australian winemaking techniques, resulting in a product rich in heritage and authenticity.

Produced from naturally concentrated, cane-cut fruit, the 2008 Rockford Semillon delivers an intense and complex flavor profile. The cane-cut method involves leaving grapes to dry on the vine, concentrating sugars and flavors, which imparts a luscious sweetness balanced impeccably by vibrant acidity. This balance creates a smooth, velvety texture and a beautifully harmonious finish that enhances any dessert pairing.

The wine’s medium-sized 375ml bottle is thoughtfully designed for special occasions or indulgent moments. It pairs exquisitely with delicate desserts, artisanal cheeses, or can be savored on its own as an elegant after-dinner treat. Rockford Cane Cut Semillon’s depth and finesse capture the unique terroir of Barossa Valley, renowned for producing wines with heightened intensity and complexity thanks to its warm, sun-drenched vineyards.

Celebrated as a refined example of Australian dessert wines, this vintage is sourced from a premium private cellar, ensuring exceptional quality and careful aging. The 2008 harvest reflects optimal conditions in the region, resulting in grapes that encapsulate the vibrant character and richness typical of Barossa Valley Semillon.

This wine stands out for its elegant expression of cane-cut Semillon, showcasing the skillful craftsmanship and tradition behind its creation. It is a testament to the winery’s dedication to producing wines that marry depth, sweetness, and acidity in perfect harmony, making it a prized selection for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Rockford's Cane Cut Semillon programme draws from select Barossa Valley vineyard parcels where Semillon expresses the region's mineral depth and concentration. The 2008 vintage was shaped by warm spring and early-summer conditions that encouraged shoot growth and cluster size, followed by an exceptional dry period that promoted botrytis infection in the vineyard. This noble rot concentration, a natural phenomenon requiring precise intervention, developed the intensified flavours that characterise cane-cut dessert Semillon. The winery's approach involves identifying optimal ripeness and disease development, then selectively harvesting affected fruit at peak concentration. The red-brown soils of Barossa, combined with the vintage's climatic conditions, delivered exceptional raw material for dessert production.

Vinification

Botrytised Semillon fruit was hand-harvested at high ripeness and carefully destemmed to preserve the integrity of affected berries. Pressing was conducted slowly and deliberately to extract the dense, unctuous must without overextraction of bitter compounds from the skins. The resulting juice underwent settling before fermentation commenced in temperature-controlled conditions, with yeast activity managed carefully to preserve residual sugar and aromatic character. Fermentation proceeded to approximately 50–70 grams per litre residual sugar, balancing richness with acidity. The 2008 wine matured briefly on fine lees in stainless steel, retaining freshness whilst developing complexity, before bottling in 375ml format to protect the wine's delicate balance.

About this Wine

Rockford

Rockford Wines was established in 1984 and is located in Tanunda, South Australia. Robert O'Callaghan and Ben Radford are the winemakers. Robert O’Callaghan acknowledged at an early stage the future of regional definition, the importance of heritage and the preservation of both physical and viticultural resources, and is one of the most important characters in today’s Australian winemaking.

The fruit, from 60-140 year-old vines, is sourced from local growers in the Barossa including around Kalimna, Ebenezer, Moppa Springs, the Eden Valley and Central, which gives tremendous colour, power and richness to the fruit.

Two retailers in Sydney, and one each in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth sell Rockford wines, along with a few restauraunts. The Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is very scarce though and is likely to be unavailable. Since its release in 1984, The Basket Press Shiraz has been produced every vintage, and represents what Rockford is all about more than any other wine. Rockford was also ranked No.1 on TripAdvisor among 22 attractions in Tanunda.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
