There is one fact that explains the elegance, purity and intensity of the Rockford reds: they are a notch less alcoholic than their Barossa Valley peers, the power silky, its delivery effortless.

Most often my favourite Rockford red.

Juicy dark cherry, blackcurrant, aniseed, up-front and perfumed, discreet vanilla oak. Medium-bodied, packed with jubey dark fruit, fine-grained tannin, pouch tobacco, long finish. Vibrant. Good structure. Will age very nicely, I feel. GW

It’s a jubey, jolly red of softness and sweet fruit character. Scents of raspberry lolly frogs, faint vanilla, whiffs of green herbs and violets. Pretty perfume this. The palate slips all around the palate with suppleness and ease. Simple, jammy/jelly berry fruit flavours, a lick of herbs and faint earthiness, kind of diffuse and watery through the finish. Tannins are AWOL, acidity a bit scratchy, but the general feel is of easy drinking and simple pleasure. MB, 91 points, 2018-2028.

Vineyard Cultivation

Rockford's Cabernet parcels in the Barossa Valley are planted on deep red volcanic and loam soils that promote drainage and give the wines their signature depth. The 2016 season was warm across the region, ripening the Cabernet fully and providing good natural sugar and tannin development. Rockford continues to source from long-established vineyard blocks, many planted decades ago, which yield concentrated, small berries. Vineyard management remains low-input, with hand-pruning and natural pest management favoured. This vintage's conditions produced particularly intense fruit character and powerful structure.

Vinification

Hand-harvested and destemmed, the fruit fermented naturally in open vats with minimal intervention. Rockford employs an extended maceration period to extract tannin colour and complexity, whilst maintaining fresh aromatics through cool fermentation management. The wine was aged in a combination of new and used French and American oak for approximately 18 months, with periodic racking. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally, and the wine was bottled unfiltered and unfined to preserve its natural character and evolving complexity.

Rockford

Rockford Wines was established in 1984 and is located in Tanunda, South Australia. Robert O'Callaghan and Ben Radford are the winemakers. Robert O’Callaghan acknowledged at an early stage the future of regional definition, the importance of heritage and the preservation of both physical and viticultural resources, and is one of the most important characters in today’s Australian winemaking.

The fruit, from 60-140 year-old vines, is sourced from local growers in the Barossa including around Kalimna, Ebenezer, Moppa Springs, the Eden Valley and Central, which gives tremendous colour, power and richness to the fruit.

Two retailers in Sydney, and one each in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth sell Rockford wines, along with a few restauraunts. The Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is very scarce though and is likely to be unavailable. Since its release in 1984, The Basket Press Shiraz has been produced every vintage, and represents what Rockford is all about more than any other wine. Rockford was also ranked No.1 on TripAdvisor among 22 attractions in Tanunda.

If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
