Tasting Notes

Santa Rita Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon 1994 exemplifies the highest achievement of Chilean winemaking, offering a rare glimpse into the legacy and excellence of the Santa Rita estate. Crafted exclusively from a single block of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon in Alto Jahuel, Alto Maipo Valley, this vintage captures the unique terroir of one of Chile’s most celebrated wine regions.

Renowned for its Mediterranean climate characterized by warm days and cool evenings, Alto Maipo provides ideal conditions for cultivating premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The 1994 vintage benefits from this balanced climate, allowing the grapes to develop concentrated flavors and maintain vibrant acidity. Harvested from vines over 30 years old, the wine reveals intense aromas of blackberry and cassis, layered with subtle notes of cedar, tobacco, and earth, reflecting the complexity and depth of the terroir.

Matured with precision in high-quality oak barrels, the wine displays a full-bodied structure with velvety tannins and a long, elegant finish. The careful aging process enhances its nuanced profile without overshadowing the fruit expression, resulting in a harmonious and refined palate experience. This bottle, sourced from a premium private cellar, offers exceptional aging potential and remains a coveted classic from one of Chile’s most prestigious labels.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Santa Rita was established in 1880 and remains one of Chile's most respected wine producers. Casa Real represents their flagship Cabernet from Maipo Valley, where volcanic and alluvial soils provide ideal drainage and mineral complexity. The 1994 vintage was characterised by moderate rainfall and steady warmth, creating balanced ripening conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. Santa Rita's mature vineyard blocks in Maipo benefit from the valley's consistent diurnal temperature range, crucial for developing phenolic structure in this cool-climate expression of Cabernet.

Vinification

Hand-selected fruit underwent fermentation in temperature-monitored facilities with careful extraction to build structure without over-extraction. Post-fermentation, the wine was aged in a combination of French oak and American oak, typical of 1990s Chilean winemaking practice. The extended oak régime—likely 18–24 months—allows integration of oak spice and development of tertiary aromas. The 1994 Casa Real would have benefited from additional bottle age to achieve full complexity.
