Tasting Notes

Abundant Tempranillo black fruits, plums, cocoa and wet earth overlaid with Touriga National’s pungent fruit mince, jasmine scented florals and nutmeg/cinnamon spices. It is a rich flavoursome, medium-full bodied wine. The palate is long and consistent with integrated tannins that provide for a balanced finish, and a synergy with food.

72% Tempranillo 28% Touriga (also contains Tinta Cão). Best enjoyed over the next five years whilst it’s fresh and alive.

Critic Scores

Deep, dark red with a good purple tint, the bouquet is smoky charcuterie, dried herbs, and bresaola. Berry fruits are there but buried deep among the forceful tannins and savoury/barrel-derived nuances. The length is prodigious, assisted by a warmth from alcohol, the concentrated flavour more than a match for it. Long and resonating. A powerful wine with masses of tannins, and very ageworthy.

Vineyard Cultivation

SC Pannell was founded in 2004 by Stephen and Fiona Pannell after Stephen's years as a Bordeaux-trained red winemaker, and the family has since become one of McLaren Vale's most thoughtful growers of Iberian and Mediterranean varieties. This blend draws Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional from vineyards across the Vale, where warm, maritime-influenced growing conditions and a patchwork of ironstone, sandy loam and limestone-derived soils suit these drought-tolerant grapes. Farming favours low intervention and restraint over ripeness. The 2021 season was cooler and even, with a mild summer and a long, unhurried ripening period that preserved acidity and aromatic detail across old and established plantings, giving a wine of concentration without heaviness.

Vinification

Fruit was picked separately by variety and fermented as individual parcels, with Tempranillo forming the core of the blend and Touriga Nacional adding aromatic lift and structure; a small portion of Tinta Cao completes the field of Iberian varieties. Fermentation proceeded on skins to build the dense, forceful tannin structure noted by reviewers, with extended maceration for colour and grip. The wine completed malolactic fermentation and was matured in seasoned French oak, chosen to frame rather than flavour the fruit. Components were assembled after elevage and the wine bottled with the savoury, charcuterie-like complexity and prodigious length characteristic of the style. Exact percentages and oak regime for this release NEEDS VERIFICATION.

About this Wine

S.C. Pannell

Esteemed by his contemporaries in Australia, Steve Pannell has been named as one of the 50 most influential contributors to the wine world by Decanter Magazine and has twice won Australia's coveted Jimmy Watson trophy - most recently in 2014 for his 2013 Adelaide Hills Syrah. Having produced vintages at Wirra Wirra and Hardy's Tintara before working overseas in Burgundy's Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Bordeaux's Chateau Mouton Rothschild and G.D. Vajra in Barolo.

Pannell's ethos is simple: "I try to create wines that suit our climate and way of life - wines to drink with the food we grow, make and eat in Australia."

The portfolio is based on parcels of old-vine, dry grown Shiraz and Grenache from McLaren Vale and continued to expand to include Nebbiolo, Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional in addition to aromatic whites from the Adelaide Hills. Pannell's preferred winemaking techniques include open fermentation using natural yeasts. By maturing his wines in large format oak, Pannell retains each variety's integrity, showcasing its quintessential characteristics.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
