Tasting Notes

A formidable expression of west-facing Marananga hillside Shiraz, the 2023 Hillside is a wine of depth, structure and unmistakable Barossa power. Sourced from the prized Lone Palm Vineyard and matured for 18 months in French and American oak, it is built with serious intent; unfiltered, unfined and destined for longevity. This is Shiraz in its most concentrated, brooding form, yet carried by polish, precision and a long architectural tannin line.

Across the critics, the consensus is clear: this is a release of both power and restraint, already exceptional, but clearly built for the cellar and for time.

Critic Scores

Dark ruby with serious concentration. This 2023 Hillside Shiraz from Lone Palm Vineyard, south of Marananga, delivers full-throttle Barossa power; rich, savoury and deeply flavoursome with brooding layers of dark chocolate, cocoa, smoky oak and warming spice. Aged 18 months in French and American oak, it shows outstanding depth, full body and seamless texture. Fine tannins carry the wine to a long, moreish finish packed with complex fruit and savoury character.

★★★★★ Southern Marananga Shiraz at its best; powerful, refined and built for the long haul.

Gracefully rich and opulent, the wine shows blackberry, dark plum, cinnamon, vanillin oak, and potpourri aromas on the nose. The concentrated palate offers excellent depth and richly textured mouthfeel, wonderfully complemented by layers of silky tannins, finishing impressively long and sturdy. At its best: now to 2040.

It’s as closed as a bank vault at this time, but there’s clearly a lot going on inside: rich red and blue berry fruits polished with fine French oak to start with. After a couple of days in the opened bottle, there are hints of leather, licorice, chocolate and coffee on a backbone of fine-grained tannin, long, smooth and tight. Built for future glory; needs a few years to open up, and then a few more to reach its full potential.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
