Tasting Notes

Secret Deal Moppa Barossa Valley GSM 2022 is a striking example of premium Australian winemaking, crafted by an ex-Penfolds Barossa Valley winemaker whose expertise is evident in every sip. This GSM blend, comprising Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre, originates from a boutique vineyard in Moppa, acquired in 2018, which formerly supplied fruit exclusively to Penfolds, guaranteeing exceptional quality and terroir expression.

Harvested from the rich soils of the renowned Barossa Valley, a region celebrated for its warm climate and superb grape-growing conditions, this vintage showcases the unique characteristics of the 2022 growing season. The Barossa Valley’s legacy of producing bold, full-bodied wines is perfectly embodied in this GSM blend, which balances ripe fruit flavors with structured tannins and a lingering finish.

Scoring an impressive 95 points from Wine Orbit, the Secret Deal Moppa GSM 2022 has been praised for its depth, complexity, and elegant integration of varietals. Expect vibrant aromas of dark berries, plum, and subtle spicy nuances complemented by hints of earthiness and oak. On the palate, it delivers a harmonious blend of rich fruit intensity and refined texture, making it a standout wine for both connoisseurs and collectors seeking distinguished Barossa Valley expressions.

Meticulously crafted with attention to detail from vineyard to bottle, this wine reflects the passion and skill of a winemaker with Penfolds pedigree, ensuring every element contributes to a sophisticated and memorable drinking experience. Whether enjoyed now or cellared to enhance its evolving character, the Secret Deal Moppa Barossa Valley GSM 2022 represents outstanding value and provenance.

Critic Scores

Wonderfully ripe and fragrant, the wine shows dark berry, violet, mixed spice and roasted hazelnut aromas, followed by a splendidly weighted palate offering succulent fruit flavours with fleshy texture and fine-grained tannins. It’s silky and generous with a lengthy velvety finish.

The 2021 release was an absolute belter and winemaker [redacted] has levelled up with this 2022 GSM. A fabulous drink, the savoury appeal really stood out on this occasion. A 62/31/7 blend compared to the 56/39/5 of 2021, it’s great to see vintage variation at play with the subtle adjustments to the blend. The winter of 2021 was one of the wettest on record for those who love some vintage data. I tasted this not too long after bottling. It’s so new it is yet to be released at the time of writing. Its youth is evident but a little more bottle age will be of benefit. Blue fruits open the account with baking apices and some meatiness eager to introduce themselves. Layers of licorice, puffs of dirt road and a flicker of orange drive the savoury profile but the pretty aromas of purple flowers and spice cupboard keep my nose going back to the glass. Densely coloured and attractive to the eye, it speaks of the Moppa soils. A fabulous blend that will age comfortably over the medium term, lovers of a great GSM blend will find a happy home with this in their glass.

Gold Medal

A purely fruited expression of 62% grenache, 31% shiraz and 7% mataro, matured for 10 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads. Magenta-edged crimson with some nice ginger spice coming ahead of the ripe plum, blueberry and boysenberry fruits. Spicy with citrus blossom top notes and a fine, toothsome layer of tannins at its base. It makes for great drinking indeed, with a velvety flow of spiced, plummy fruit.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
