Tasting Notes

Inky black in colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Ripe dark plum, blackberry and liquorice aromas stem from the glass followed by vanillin cedar, light fennel, earth and pepper. Full in body with a stern underbelly of firm tannins, the structured palate is layered with blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. Vanillin cedar, dusty earth and spicy pepper nuances ensue on the back half. Muscular feel with some tannic grip to the long sturdy aftertaste.
Cellar 6-8 years.

Critic Scores

The 2017 Moonambel Shiraz is eminently balanced and refined on the nose, with blood, minerals and flowers in equal measure. This is super composed, balanced and, as far as wine drinking pleasure goes, a triumph. There are notes of cardamom pod, sandalwood, scraped vanilla pod, pomegranate molasses, crushed rocks and kicked earth, and the layers of flavor are defined by very fine, ductile, tannic texture and support. Super. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Perfumed and beautifully lifted, the nose reveals blackberry, blueberry and dark plum layered with cracked pepper, violet and subtle graphite minerality. There’s a striking cool- climate elegance to the aromatics, balancing purity of fruit with savoury complexity and spice. The palate is medium to full-bodied and exceptionally poised, delivering concentrated dark fruit before fine, powdery tannins tighten the wine into a long, beautifully structured frame. Notes of spice, olive tapenade and earthy minerality build through the mid-palate with impressive detail and precision. Fresh acidity carries the wine effortlessly through an elegant, persistent finish. Beautifully drinking right now….don’t wait any longer!
Vino Masters Score: 96 / 100 ★★★★★ Elegant, mineral and world-class

Stylish and graceful, the wine shows dark berry, potpourri, cured meat, bouquet garni, and fine oak aromas. The palate displays a plush texture and an expansive mouthfeel, well supported by layers of fine-grained tannins, leading to a wonderfully harmonious, seductively complex finish. At its best: now to 2032.

This is only medium-bodied, and is red-fruited (the vintage speaking presumably). It was made prior to Dalwhinnie's acquisition by the Fogarty Group, so its future is yet to be charted.

Deepish, bright red/purple colour, youthful. The aromas are fresh and bright, fruit-driven and spicy with some meaty-reductive notes and a suggestion of whole-bunch. The taste is of plum, blackberry and cherry pie, the palate medium-bodied and balanced, the tannins fine and assertive but balanced. A very appealing style of shiraz.
