Tasting Notes

Crafted from a single vineyard in the heart of the Barossa Valley, this museum release Shiraz represents the pinnacle of old-vine winemaking. The vines, rooted deeply in the ancient soils of the region, produce fruit of remarkable concentration and intensity – the very essence of what makes Barossa Shiraz world-famous.

Aged gracefully for nearly a decade before release, the 2017 Museum Reserve offers a rich and opulent expression of Shiraz. The bouquet unfolds with layers of dark blackberry, mulberry, and black cherry, underpinned by notes of cocoa, licorice, and warm spice. On the palate, it is powerful yet refined, with plush tannins, remarkable depth, and a long, lingering finish that speaks to both the vineyard’s pedigree and the patience of extended cellaring.

This is a wine that was originally positioned among the highest tiers of Barossa Shiraz, carrying a release price of $480 per bottle. Today, in a remarkable opportunity, it can be secured for just $59.99 – offering collectors and lovers of fine Shiraz the chance to experience a museum-level release at a fraction of its original value.

Critic Scores

Produced only in exceptional vintages, 2017 was one for the Barossa. Small volumes, an impressive example of Barossa shiraz. Eight years old, entering its prime. Nose is earthy, dark red fruits with a slight raisiny character, vibrant and energetic. Dark chocolate, licorice, and subtle coffee grinds add depth. Well-defined tannins, integrated oak. Hints of thyme and sage bush bring further complexity. Plenty of time on its side.

Sweetly fruited and fragrant, the bouquet shows dark fruit intensity, potpourri, cured meat, and roasted hazelnut aromas. The palate delivers excellent weight, a plump mouthfeel, and supple texture, splendidly supported by fine-grained tannins, finishing persistent and satisfying.

Brick red with a developing brown hue. The nose is complex and savoury, showing leather strap, liquorice and dried spice, with clear tertiary development. The palate is spicy, savoury and firmly structured, driven by Nebbiolo-like tannins. Notes of liquorice, leather and chalky texture build through the mid-palate, with ripe fruit depth supporting the structure. The finish is long and persistent, with everlasting spice and tannin lingering well beyond the palate. It’s mature and ready. Vino Masters Score:‍ 95/100 ★★★★★ A serious, mature Barossa Shiraz showing structure and savoury complexity.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
