Tasting Notes

Bright and juicy, this riesling is characterised by green apple and lime juice. Hints of sea spray and sage complement opulent pear and lime. Crisp and refreshing with a long and vibrant finish, it is a wine of superb length and balance. It will age beautifully.

Critic Scores

Pale straw with green highlights. The nose is developing beautifully, offering lifted notes of kaffir lime leaf alongside a classic hint of kerosene. At 11.3% alcohol, the palate is soft, silky and finely balanced, with flavours of lemon rind layered over a distinct flinty minerality. That combination of low alcohol, textural softness and linear acidity highlights the hallmark precision of Porongurup Riesling, while the subtle kerosene character signals its graceful early evolution without sacrificing freshness.

Vino Masters Score: 95 / 100
★★★★★ The wine shows excellent poise and purity, with a long-refined finish

Fine, poised, and firmly structured, the wine shows white-fleshed nectarine, lemon sorbet, lime peel, and white-flower nuances on the nose, leading to a concentrated, focused, and linear palate. Wonderfully structured and balanced with racy acidity, leading to a persistent, tantalising finish.

Vineyard Cultivation

Shepherd's Hut is a small Porongurup label within the Great Southern of Western Australia, its Riesling made by Rob Diletti, the acclaimed winemaker behind neighbouring Castle Rock Estate. The Porongurup sub-region sits on ancient granite hills, and its Riesling vineyards are planted on free-draining, gravelly soils derived from decomposed granite over a karri-loam base. Cool nights, elevation and a long, temperate ripening season are the hallmarks that give Porongurup Riesling its low alcohol, fine acidity and flinty minerality. The 2021 growing season delivered pristine, disease-free fruit, and this bottle is a museum release held in the winery's own cellars, offered with several years of bottle age to show early development.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-selected and gently handled to protect the delicate, aromatic character of Porongurup Riesling. Whole bunches were pressed and the juice cool-fermented in stainless steel to retain purity, citrus definition and the racy natural acidity that drives the style. The wine was made dry, without malolactic fermentation or oak, so that fruit and mineral detail remain unmasked, and bottled at a modest 11.3% alcohol. It was then cellared at the winery and released as a museum wine, allowing the classic bottle-aged kerosene note to emerge alongside kaffir lime and flinty minerality while freshness is preserved. Precise pressing and fermentation figures NEEDS VERIFICATION.
