Shepherd's Hut Wines is a small Porongurup producer in Western Australia's Great Southern, working the mature vineyard formerly known as Zarephath, high on the ancient granite slopes of the Porongurup range. The site's decomposed-granite and karri-loam soils, cool nights and elevation make it one of the country's more reliable homes for Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay. The Vineyard Series Pinot is drawn from these estate blocks, farmed for balance and modest yields. The 2024 Great Southern season was favourable for cool-climate reds, with a mild ripening period allowing the fruit to reach flavour ripeness while holding the natural acidity that gives these wines their perfume and drive.

This small-batch Pinot Noir is made in a restrained, cool-climate style. Hand-picked fruit is fermented in open vessels, with a portion of whole-bunch material typically used to add aromatic lift and fine tannin, and gentle plunging during a measured time on skins. After pressing the wine is matured in French oak, a small proportion new, to support rather than mask the red-fruit and spice character. The approach favours purity and freshness, yielding a fragrant, finely structured wine consistent with the estate's growing reputation for Pinot Noir.
