Tasting Notes

Established in 2001, Sticks has been the Yarra Valley's quiet achiever for over 20 years now. That said, our years of quiet determination haven't gone unnoticed; these days, we stand as one of the Yarra Valley's most well-known wineries, crafting the wines the Yarra does best. After setting up stumps in the Yarra Valley in 2003, Anthony Fikkers has worked for a swag of Yarra Valley wineries including Giant Steps, De Bortoli, Mac Forbes and Medhurst, and somehow found time for stints in France, Italy and Germany along the way. He’s a man with plenty of cred, the highest of skills, the sharpest of wits and the purest of palates.

Sticks Yarra Valley is beautifully situated on a single site in the picturesque Yarra Valley, an hour’s drive from Melbourne. The Winery and Cellar Door, which are nestled in to the base of the Christmas Hills, have unparalleled views of the Estate vineyard and Great Dividing ranges. Sweet-sour cherry fruits, light spice and some earthy savoury notes; delicately balanced with a whisper of tannin, lick of acidity and some juicy fruit to finish.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Sticks is a Yarra Valley label established over two decades ago and now owned by Greenstone Vineyards, based at Coldstream in Victoria. It has long been the region's quiet achiever, offering approachable, regionally expressive wines at accessible prices. Fruit for this non-vintage Pinot Noir is drawn from Yarra Valley vineyards, where cool-climate conditions, elevation and a mix of grey loam and clay soils suit Pinot, giving red-fruited wines with fresh acidity and fine tannin. As a non-vintage release the wine is assembled to a consistent house style rather than expressing a single season, blending parcels to deliver plush, fruit-forward Yarra Pinot for early, easy drinking.

Vinification

Fruit is fermented in a straightforward, fruit-focused manner, with destemmed berries and gentle handling to keep the palate supple and bright. A measured time on skins builds fine, chalky tannin without heaviness, and the wine sees a modest oak component that contributes subtle spice rather than overt wood character. The style favours plush red fruits, a touch of bramble and fresh thyme leaf, carried by vibrant acidity. Made for immediate enjoyment, it is an unpretentious, versatile Yarra Valley Pinot Noir.
