Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation for producing exceptional wines, these wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in Tasmania at the moment

Quickly becoming one of Australia's best alternative whites - you can't miss with this wine - absolutely superb thing to drink

Savoury and saline, there is nice tart fruit on the nose, some, as expected, tight acidity, yet all the while, textured and quite moreish on the palate.

Tasting Notes

Joe Holyman crafts true cool-climate renditions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from his Stoney Rise winery the Tamar Valley in Northern Tasmania. The wines across the board are made in a lighter and lifted style, and see a good amount of whole-bunch fermentation to add structure and aromatic complexity, and really underpin that sense of crunchy freshness that characterises many of the wines from this region

Made in a modern, clean style, a far cry from the traditional oxidative Jura style. This plays on bright acid, subtle texture and Savagnin's saline and mineral edge.

Critic Scores

Granny Smith apple, a salt crusted sourdough kind of thing, pistachio nuts and chamomile, plus a little ginger. It’s light, kind of sappy, has something of lick of 9V battery energy, peanuts, lime and green apple, a slight kombucha tang here, some chalky texture, with a lively finish of excellent length. Here’s an energetic and distinctive wine that’s also varietal and refreshing. Yes.

Vineyard Cultivation

Stoney Rise is a small, well-regarded producer in the Tamar Valley of northern Tasmania, run by Joe and Lou Holyman. Joe Holyman, from a Tasmanian grape-growing family, built the label's reputation on cool-climate whites and Pinot Noir made in a lighter, energetic style. Savagnin, an alpine white grape better known from the Jura, suits the region's cool, maritime conditions, which preserve the taut natural acidity and saline, mineral edge that define the wine. The vineyard sits on river-influenced soils in the Tamar, and farming favours freshness and drive over weight. The cool 2025 Tasmanian season retained bright acidity and drove the crunchy, savoury profile the wine is known for.

Vinification

Fruit is picked to hold acidity, then handled gently to make a modern, clean-styled Savagnin, a deliberate departure from the traditional oxidative Jura idiom. Fermentation preserves varietal purity, with a portion of the wine gaining texture on lees to give the chalky, moreish palate weight noted by reviewers. The result plays on tart green-apple and citrus fruit, a saline mineral thread and lively acidity through a finish of good length. The wine carries 13.5% alcohol.
