Tasting Notes

The hand-picked Pinot Noir grapes were de-stemmed into small open two and three tonne fermenters, with daily hand plunging and gentle pump overs during fermentation.

Attractive plum and cherry aromas are enhanced by some gamey undertones and smoky oak influence. Nice classic Pinot palate, with savoury and tight tannins at this youthful stage offering a firm direction. Lots of cherry and spice flavours, opening up to reveal a nice juiciness and increasing flavour intensity, but all within a very refined framework.

Critic Scores

Stonier's bread and butter range and a good 'un this vintage. Fruit off grower vineyards but all managed in-house, which gives a level of quality control. This pops and crackles with vitality, good fruit and varietal flavour. Heady aromas are punctuated by red cherries and blood orange doused in exotic spices and fresh herbs. The palate is on the light side of medium bodied with fine tannins and refreshing acidity throughout. A lovely drink.

A blend of the grower vineyards, a mix of clones. Approximately 20% whole bunch on the sites that sit on volcanic soils, with everything else destemmed. Aged in 500L puncheons of which 8% was new oak. A fragrant celebration of Mornington Peninsula luminous charm, it’s impossible not to be swept away with the gleaming fruit, compact flavour and middle palate pulp and flesh. Cherry compote, plummy goodness and some Gala apple skin. Clove, nigella seed and dewy potting soil. Tannins are sandy and prop up the fruit, before a wash of fresh acidity. It’s immediately satisfying and a delightful drink without food or if you are after a suggestion may I offer the idea of lamb shanks swimming in butter mash. Drink now or will cellar well for 2-4 years.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Stonier is one of the Mornington Peninsula's founding estates, established by Brian and Noel Stonier in the 1970s and long associated with well-priced, cool-climate Pinot Noir. This wine draws on a spread of grower vineyards across the Peninsula, all managed in-house to maintain quality control, and takes in a mix of clones and sites, including parcels planted on the region's red volcanic (basalt-derived) soils. The Peninsula's maritime setting, cooling bay breezes and moderate ripening deliver perfumed, medium-bodied Pinot. The 2024 vintage produced vibrant, varietally clear fruit with fresh acidity, giving a wine of energy and fine structure across the blend.

Vinification

The blend was assembled from several grower vineyards and a mix of clones. Roughly 20 per cent whole bunches were used on the parcels grown on volcanic soils, with the remainder destemmed. Fermentations proceeded in the winery before pressing and transfer to 500-litre French oak puncheons, of which around 8 per cent were new, for maturation. The larger-format, low-new-oak regime was chosen to build texture and support the fruit without dominating it. The result is a light-to-medium-bodied Pinot with sandy, fruit-propping tannins, red-cherry and blood-orange lift, exotic spice and a wash of fresh acidity, ready to drink now but with a few years of cellaring in reserve.
