Tasting Notes

Xarel-Lo 47%
Macabeu 34%
Parellada 19%

With a blend of native Spanish grape varieties Xarel lo, Macabeo and Parellada, this Cava showcases a fine balance of fruitiness and elegance. The time of lethargy in the vineyard is a pause; a period of latency, when the vines rest and sleep. Sumarroca Letargia Gran Reserva Brut Nature cava is aged for ten years, maturing to achieve the best aromas and subtle touches. Made from carefully selected fruit from our vineyards, this cava reveals the complexity and long finish that extended ageing brings. Tasting notes A bright yellow cava with a gold rim, it has intense aromas of white fruit and flint, accompanied by toast and subtly aromatic grassy notes. This is a serious, elegant cava, with character. In the mouth, the fleshy stone fruits appear. It is tasty and mellow, but with acidity. The past

Critic Scores

Lovely nuttiness, flinty smokiness as well. Brioche on the palate, lovely energy and autulytic notes combined - quite serious and in a lovely place right now. Toasty, zesty, chalky and layeerd.

Colour: Straw
Aroma: Fine lees, fragrant herbs, characterful, ripe fruit, dry nuts
Flavour: Powerful, flavourful, good acidity, fine bead, fine bitter notes

Grapefruit pith, lemon curd, sea urchins and dried herbs on the nose. Creamy and biscuity on the palate, with a medium body and soft, rounded mousse. Elegant and flavorful.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bodegues Sumarroca is a family estate founded by the Sumarroca family in the Alt Penedès, centred on their holdings around Subirats and the El Rebato estate in the hills west of Barcelona. The Letargia Gran Reserva draws on estate-grown Xarel-lo alongside Macabeu and Parellada, the classic Penedès trio, planted on limestone-influenced clay soils at moderate altitude. Farming across the estate is certified organic, with cover crops and careful canopy work to preserve acidity in a warm Mediterranean climate. The 2012 season in Catalonia was generally dry and warm, giving ripe but structured base wines from fruit intended for long lees ageing.

Vinification

Grapes were hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, with the base wine fermented in stainless steel to retain freshness and varietal definition. The cuvee was then tiraged and underwent secondary fermentation in bottle following the traditional method, laid down for an extended Gran Reserva maturation on lees well beyond the minimum thirty months, developing the toast, pastry and dried-apple autolytic character the wine is known for. After many years resting horizontally, the bottles were riddled and disgorged, and finished as Brut Nature with no dosage added, preserving the wine's line of acidity and dryness.
