Tasting Notes

Made in a fragrant and juicy style for a lighter drinking red the 2023 Fairbank Sangiovese has a vibrant red colour with aromas of maraschino cherries and red delicious apples with fragrant herbal and potpourri notes. The fresh and crunchy mid weight palate has juicy red fruits and a touch of savoury complexity complemented by balanced grainy tannins and finishing with a hint of bitter chocolate on the finish

Vineyard Cultivation

Sutton Grange Winery lies in the granite hills between Bendigo and the Macedon Ranges in central Victoria, working organically grown estate vineyards on decomposed granite soils. Sangiovese, the great red grape of Tuscany, suits the site's warm days and cool nights, which help retain the variety's savoury acidity and fine tannin. The Fairbank tier is the estate's fragrant, juicy, earlier-drinking range. The 2023 central Victorian season was cooler and later than the preceding warm years, favouring freshness and perfume, well suited to the bright, food-friendly style in which this Sangiovese is made.

Vinification

Grapes are handled gently and fermented to preserve Sangiovese's red-fruited perfume and its characteristic bright acidity and savoury, drying tannin. The wine is made in a fragrant, juicy style rather than for extraction, with maturation in older oak to build texture without masking varietal character. It is bottled to drink well on release while carrying some ageing capacity. Alcohol is around 13%.
