Tasting Notes

2021 produced generously ripe Syrah with individual parcels from our HOG and Rams Horn blocks exhibiting varying degrees of perfume and spice. Hand-picked and fermented in 5t open fermenters with 30% whole bunches included. Matured in French Oak barriques and puncheons for 10 Months, 15% new. Ruby purple in colour. The nose is deep and brooding with blackberry and plum fruits, a violet perfume and peppery spice layers. Medium to full bodied with mulberry and black plum fruits, a generous mid palate supported by sweet new oak and dusty cocoa tannins leading to a long dry finish. A rich wine perfectly suited for immediate drinking or mid-term cellaring. Bottled February 2022.

Critic Scores

Deep, bright red purple colour. Attractive ripe fruit aromas, smoked meats, dried fruits including a touch of prune. Smoky, pepper, gently spicy bouquet. In the mouth, the wine is full bodied, rich and fleshy. There is fruit sweetness at the core and this is surrounded by a mass of supple but gently drying tannins. This has a whiff of the cool climate about it and is very good indeed. It drinks well now but should continue to age beautifully for at least a decade 13 Oct 2025

Looks dark and intense, but it's a very different story when you actually taste. Medium bodied, expressive and sleek, this youngster fits the Fairbank style. Black cherry, blueberry, plum, cocoa, spice, Dutch licorice. Perky and fresh, the subtle layer of dried herbs helps. The result is a fleshy palate encased in even-handed tannins. It's age-worthy, too, if you wish.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Sutton Grange Winery is set in the granite country between Bendigo and the Macedon Ranges in central Victoria, farming organically grown estate vineyards on decomposed granite soils at cool elevation. The Fairbank range is the estate's medium-bodied, earlier-drinking tier, and its Syrah leans to a cooler-climate expression, with the pepper and spice that mark the site. The 2021 Victorian vintage was widely regarded as excellent, an even, temperate season that produced red wines of freshness, fine tannin and good structure, evident in this Syrah's balance of ripe fruit and cool-climate lift.

Vinification

Fruit is fermented in a medium-bodied, restrained style, with gentle extraction to preserve the sleek, expressive palate and even-handed tannins that define the Fairbank Syrah. Maturation in oak, largely older, adds subtle spice and structure without dominating the black cherry, blueberry and plum fruit. The wine is built to drink well on release yet reward medium-term cellaring. Alcohol is around 13.5%.
