Tasting Notes

Sylvain Cathiard Nuit St Georges Premier Cru Aux Thorey 2014 stands as a rare treasure within the Burgundy wine landscape, offering a captivating expression of one of the region's most discreet Premier Cru vineyards. Directly sourced from a premium private cellar, this wine represents the meticulous craftmanship of Sylvain Cathiard and the distinctive terroir of Aux Thorey.

Known for its low pH and vivid acidity, this vintage showcases a finesse and vibrant freshness that captivates with subtle complexity. The wine speaks in quiet detail, revealing layers of red cherry, earth, and delicate spice, all underscored by a mineral-driven backbone characteristic of Nuit Saint Georges vineyards. Cathiard’s bottlings from Nuits-Saint-Georges remain under the radar, making this Aux Thorey selection particularly sought-after by collectors and connoisseurs alike.

The 2014 vintage is noted for its balanced growing season that preserved acidity and elegance, allowing this Premier Cru to express its unique sense of place with grace and precision. As with many wines from the Côte de Nuits, it offers both immediate appeal and the structure to evolve beautifully with time.

This wine is a prime example of Burgundy’s Premier Cru excellence, combining subtle power, refined tannins, and vibrant freshness. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, Sylvain Cathiard Nuit St Georges Premier Cru Aux Thorey 2014 captures the essence of terroir-driven Pinot Noir elevated by expert winemaking.

Critic Scores

The 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey has a gorgeous bouquet with blueberry and wild strawberry fruit, hints of cassis intermingling with violet, a little creaminess coming from the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannin, and a keen thread of acidity that binds the succulent dark plum and blackberry fruit together. There is a sense of controlled opulence here, very silky in the mouth with a very precise finish that does not hang about like the 2009 I tasted a few weeks earlier. The coolness of this vineyard just curtails any ostentation here and renders this an extremely fine Aux Thorey.

Medium red. Musky raspberry, blueberry and licorice on the fresh nose, plus leather and earth nuances. Fine-grained, sappy and dense, with a strong calcaire quality energizing the middle palate but keeping the wine tight today. Finishes long and classically dry, even a bit austere, but with late-arriving tannins and noteworthy finesse. Cathiard's old vines here are on a steep slope featuring shallow soil over rock. This holds out excellent aging potential.
