Tasting Notes

Sylvain Cathiard Nuits St Georges Premier Cru Les Murgers 2014 is an exquisite expression of Burgundy’s renowned terroir, offering a harmonious balance of elegance and structure. Sourced from a premium private cellar, this limited-production Premier Cru hails from the Vosne side of Nuits-Saint-Georges, where Les Murgers vineyards provide a refined finesse distinct from the more robust southern crus.

Known for its delicate yet profound character, this 2014 vintage showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of Sylvain Cathiard. The wine’s nuanced bouquet reveals layers of red berries, subtle earthiness, and a hint of spice, unfolding gracefully on the palate. Its firm tannic backbone is beautifully integrated with vibrant acidity, delivering a long, polished finish that appeals to collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Les Murgers stands out within Cathiard’s small-volume cuvées for its ability to marry power with elegance, making it a prized bottle for those who appreciate the complexity and depth of Premier Cru Burgundy. This wine reflects the unique microclimate and rich, well-drained soils of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, elevating it as a fine example of the region’s prestigious winemaking heritage.

Ideal for cellaring or immediate enjoyment, the 2014 vintage captures the essence of a year celebrated for balanced weather conditions that fostered ripe, expressive fruit with excellent aging potential. Whether part of a refined collection or savored during special occasions, this bottle offers a timeless Burgundy experience marked by precision, finesse, and expressive terroir.

Critic Scores

The 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers has a very different nose to the Aux Thorey, a little more complexity here and less opulence, more black fruit here with blackberry and bilberry, a touch of dark plum. The palate is medium-bodied with a seductive, silky texture; the 60% new oak is seamlessly integrated, but this retains a killer sense of tension on the finish. Controlled power here, controlled power.

An intensely floral-suffused nose grudgingly reveals its aromas of spice, herbal tea, earth and wafting red currant. There is excellent size, weight and power to the muscular yet unusually refined flavors thanks to the fine-grained tannins that are dense enough to coat the palate on the impressively long if youthfully austere finale. This well-detailed effort should age gracefully over the mid-term. *Outstanding*

Good medium red. Cool aromas of blackberry, licorice and minerals are complemented by sexy oak tones. Intense, penetrating flavors of purple fruits and salty minerality are classically dry and quite backward. Dense and palate-staining but, like the Aux Thorey, this will need time in bottle to reveal its personality. The yield here was a full 45 hectoliters per hectare. (ST) 92+
