Tasting Notes

Thalia is a Tasmanian sparkling range created by the Fogarty family, named after the Greek muse of festivity. After reclaiming the historic Lowestoft homestead six generations on, the family crafts wines using the traditional method and minimal intervention.

The non‑vintage blend is around 65% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 2% Pinot Meunier; fruit is sourced 55% from the Tasman Peninsula and 45% from the East Coast, areas renowned for cool‑climate acidity.

The base wines are fermented in stainless steel, then bottled for a second fermentation and extended lees ageing. Dosage is approximately 6 g/L. Aromas of crunchy red apple, strawberry and lemon lead into a finely beaded palate. Subtle brioche from lees contact and a clean, dry finish make it an excellent aperitif.

Critic Scores

The new-entry cuvée for the Fogarty Group's Tasmanian sparkling operation is crisp, fresh and fruity, built around cool, Tasman Peninsula pinot noir. Crunchy red apples, strawberries and lemons are the theme. Clean, precise and well put together, this is a well-balanced apéritif, more about fruit than texture or complexity. It will appreciate a little bottle age to build depth.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Thalia is a Tasmanian sparkling label within the Fogarty Wine Group, drawing fruit from cool-climate vineyards across Tasmania, including cool Tasman Peninsula Pinot Noir. Tasmania is Australia's coolest wine region, where long, mild ripening on maritime-influenced sites preserves natural acidity and delicate fruit definition, the qualities that underpin fine traditional-method sparkling. As a non-vintage wine, Thalia is built around a house style that blends across sites and seasons rather than a single harvest, selecting parcels of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from some of the state's most highly regarded vineyards to give consistency of flavour and structure from year to year.

Vinification

Fruit is hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, with the juice cool-fermented in stainless steel to protect primary fruit; a portion of the base may be worked in seasoned French oak in the reserve tier for added texture. The still base wines are blended, then tiraged and undergo secondary fermentation in bottle in the traditional method. The wine is matured on lees to build the biscuity, autolytic complexity that frames its crunchy red-apple, strawberry and citrus fruit, before riddling, disgorgement and finishing with dosage. Precise lees duration and dosage for this release are not published.
