Tasting Notes

Pale in colour with radiant green and yellow hues. Freshly cut pear, lemons, ginger and faint pine needle aromas lead to a mouth-filling burst of fruit flavour. Pear, green apple, light spices and white flowers on the palate are pulled tight by refreshing acidity. A satisfyingly easy wine to have on it’s own but will partner well with fresh salads, seafood and white meat dishes. This wine is made by the very talented Joel Pizzini with Nicholas Crampton.

Vineyard Cultivation

The Hare and the Tortoise is a value-focused exclusive label sourced from the King Valley in north-east Victoria, a cool, elevated inland region well suited to alpine white varieties. The Pinot Gris is drawn from King Valley fruit and made by Joel Pizzini, of the King Valley's Pizzini family, whose long experience with the region's aromatic whites underpins the wine. A continental climate, altitude and free-draining valley-floor and hillside soils give the fruit fresh acidity and clear varietal definition. The 2025 fruit was picked to preserve the pear, citrus, ginger and light-spice aromatics that mark the style, retaining the bright green-yellow character noted in the wine.

Vinification

The fruit was harvested and gently pressed, the juice cold-settled and fermented cool in stainless steel to protect its delicate aromatics. Made in a fresh, dry Pinot Gris style, the wine sees no oak, retaining pear, green-apple, ginger and white-flower character pulled tight by crisp natural acidity. A brief period on light lees adds a touch of texture and mouthfeel before an early bottling for drinking young. Precise pressing, yeast and lees specifics for this release NEED VERIFICATION.
