Tasting Notes

Includes 2.5% Syrah with aging taking place in French oak for a period of 9 months. Dark red in colour with black toned edges and a dark red hue. Intense ripe black cherry, strawberry and anise aromas fill the nostrils followed by some vanillin cedar, earth and spice notes. Rich, plump and quite full in style for the variety, the mid weighted palate is layered with juicy black cherry, strawberry and anise flavours with some toasty cedar, earth and spice characteristics lying underneath. Excellent concentration and flesh with velvety tannins and an opulent toasty vanilla laced conclusion.

Vineyard Cultivation

Unshackled is the value-focused range of The Prisoner Wine Company, the Constellation-owned, St Helena-based house known for bold Californian blends. The Pinot Noir draws fruit from vineyards across California, blending cooler coastal sites that give bright red-cherry lift and acidity with warmer parcels that add plush, riper black-cherry weight. The result is a fuller, more generous style than most varietal Pinot. The 2021 California vintage was a low-yielding, drought-shaped year with a mild, even growing season and cool nights, producing small, well-coloured berries with ripe fruit, good concentration and the freshness needed to balance the wine's opulent, spice-laced character.

Vinification

Made in the house's plush, approachable idiom, the Pinot Noir is fermented in stainless steel with gentle pump-overs to preserve fruit and colour while extracting supple tannin, and a small portion of Syrah (around 2.5%) is blended in to add depth, spice and structure. Malolactic fermentation rounds the acidity, and the wine is aged in French oak for roughly nine months, contributing toasty cedar, vanilla and clove that frame the juicy black-cherry, strawberry and anise flavours. It is bottled young for early, opulent drinking rather than extended cellaring.
