Critic Scores

Pen-y-Bryn is the name of a specific block off the vineyard that Theo Truyts (pronounced Trait) grafted to chardonnay in 2019 and named after a Welsh song and town (his mother-in-law is from Wales). Enough Trait lessons for today. The one that counts is in the glass. And it’s very good. This comes across as racy, pure and linear, yet not mean or lean as it harnesses the power of Margaret River fruit. Grapefruit pith and lemon zest with pure natural acidity teasing out the palate. The oak is completely obliterated by the fruit and, aside from the creamy lees, this is all about refinement. Just dips a little on the finish but a minor quibble.

Lifted nose of Bramley apple, almond, freshly pressed olive oil, ylang-ylang and rich with fine spice. The palate is powerful, showing ripples of acidity that vie for attention with supple and juicy fruit. Oak is obvious but integrated and talc-like phenolics layer finely over the palate with a fringe of popcorn flint. There’s a sense that there is more to reveal itself with this wine. Single-site fruit, 100% Gingin clone, grafted in 2020 to Sauvignon Blanc vines planted in 1988. Aged in 50% new French oak for six months.

Vineyard Cultivation

Trait Wines is the small Margaret River label of Theo Truyts (pronounced 'Trait'). Pen-y-Bryn is a specific vineyard block that Truyts grafted over to Chardonnay in 2019, naming it after a Welsh town and song in a nod to his Welsh mother-in-law. The site sits on the free-draining gravelly loams characteristic of Margaret River and is farmed on a small, hands-on scale. This 2022 is the first vintage of the wine. The season delivered Margaret River's customary fruit power balanced by firm natural acidity, producing a racy, pure and linear style that still harnesses regional depth.

Vinification

The hand-picked Chardonnay was whole-bunch pressed to barrel, where it fermented on indigenous yeasts. Elevage took place on lees in French oak, only a portion of it new, lending a creamy texture while letting grapefruit-pith and lemon-zest fruit and bright natural acidity lead; reviewers noted the oak is largely absorbed by the fruit. The wine was bottled after a relatively short time in wood to preserve its purity and linear line.
