Tasting Notes

Tyrrells Old Patch Shiraz 2019 6L Imperial (OWC) is a rare and exceptional wine drawn from one of Australia’s most historic vineyard sites. Originating from The Old Patch, a block first planted in 1867, it holds the distinction of being the oldest vineyard in New South Wales and ranks among the oldest Shiraz vineyards worldwide. This remarkable heritage imbues the wine with profound depth and complexity, shaped by over 150 years of expert viticulture and Old World tradition.

The 2019 vintage showcases the full potential of these venerable vines, yielding a Shiraz that is rich, concentrated, and deeply expressive. Aromas of ripe dark berries—blackberry and plum—are beautifully layered with nuanced spice, fragrant cedar notes, and a subtle earthiness reminiscent of the terroir’s lingering influence. On the palate, the wine offers a full-bodied structure supported by velvety tannins and a long, elegant finish that reflects its premium lineage.

This vintage has been awarded an outstanding 97 points by renowned wine critic Huon Hooke, cementing its status as a benchmark for quality and refinement in Australian Shiraz. Each bottle comes directly from a premium private cellar, ensuring optimal provenance and exclusivity.

Presented in a striking 6L Imperial format and housed in the original wooden case (OWC), this wine is not only a testament to craftsmanship but also a prized collectible. The unique terroir of The Old Patch vineyard contributes a distinctive character, blending the intensity typical of old vines with refined elegance and balance.

With its distinguished history, critical acclaim, and exceptional quality, the Tyrrells Old Patch Shiraz 2019 stands as a magnificent expression of Australia's viticultural heritage and an extraordinary addition to any premium wine collection.

Critic Scores

Deepish purple/red hue, with a reserved savoury bouquet of smoky spicy earthy tones, blackberry lurking in the background. A hint of violets and dried herbs. The flavour is concentrated and deep, and backed with fine but insistent tannins that provide a great framework for the fruit. A wine of great finesse that promises much for the future. (Vines planted in 1867. Aged 15 months in a single one-year-old 2700-litre cask)

A single block of the Old Hillside vineyard, planted in 1867. Fermented gently. Whole berries. Wild yeast. Raised in a single 2700L French cask for 15 months. These top-tier single plots undergo rigorous sorting to boot, with a seasoning of circa 15% whole bunches. Medium of feel. Sappy and crunchy. Sour cherry, rosehip, bramble and root spice. An ethereal feel. Less reductive than the Johnno's cuvée at this stage. Beautiful, with a layer of sandalwood and orange rind across a spindly tannic frame, directing the effortless flow of fruit. One direction. Long.
