Tasting Notes

Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon 1997 is a celebrated example of mature Hunter Valley Semillon, sourced from a premium private cellar and carefully preserved for exceptional development.

Renowned for its extraordinary ageing potential, Hunter Valley Semillon evolves from a delicate, citrus-driven wine into a complex and textured expression with layers of toasted complexity, honey, lanolin and finely integrated acidity. The 1997 vintage showcases the depth, elegance and character that have made aged Australian Semillon a benchmark wine style.

Rated 96 points by Jeremy Oliver, this beautifully matured Semillon offers remarkable balance, lingering flavour and impressive refinement. A compelling addition to any serious wine collection, it delivers the distinctive complexity of aged Hunter Valley wine at its finest.

Critic Scores

Restrained, late-maturing Hunter semillon of surprising depth and texture given its meagre 10.4% alcohol. It reveals developed complex nutty aromas of toast, butter and honeysuckle, with underlying scents of honeydew melon and tobacco leaf. Long and dry, with a remarkable depth of flavour and texture, it’s toasty and persistent, with waxy complexity and a refreshing lemony finish.

Light to medium yellow-green; has come through its transition phase and out of its shell to a remarkable degree over the past 12 months. A particularly complex bouquet with toasty/smoky characters, then a palate which opens with a similar range of flavours before tightening up and focussing with minerally notes and a long, piercing finish.
