Tasting Notes

Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon 2010 is an iconic Australian white wine, sourced from a premium private cellar and showcasing the remarkable ageing potential of Hunter Valley Semillon.

Made only from fruit selected from Tyrrell’s finest old-vine, dry-grown vineyards, this distinguished 2010 vintage displays refined citrus and stone-fruit flavours layered with subtle toast, lanolin and developed mineral complexity. Bright acidity and exceptional length provide balance, freshness and structure, while careful cellaring has allowed the wine to evolve with elegance and depth.

A benchmark expression of mature Hunter Valley Semillon, this limited cellar-sourced release offers outstanding provenance and sophistication. Semillon does not get any better than this.

Critic Scores

Lemon powder and subtle tropical notes, but largely drenched in freshly squeezed lime. It has richness and intensity of flavour but remains tangy and zesty – the acid line feels tight and secure – enough to anchor it safely for many years. Sails through the mouth and coasts effortlessly long through the finish. In short, a richer style, but a beautiful Vat 1. Drink: 2012 - 2025

From two dry-grown blocks with an average age of 60 years. Five years have passed since the wine was made, but it's oh so young and fresh, with years of life in front of it; its balance and length are faultless, so its future is gold-plated, but I must point it as it is today. Drink by 2040.

Vat 1 Semillon is fermented in stainless steel, spending a short time on lees in tank prior to bottling. It sees no oak. The 2010 Winemaker’s Selection Vat 1 Semillon has youthfully mute aromas of lemon peel, fresh grass, chalk boards, fresh lime juice and grapefruit. Very crisp, dry and light-bodied, it possesses an excellent concentration of citrus and mineral flavors, finishing long. Don’t even think about drinking this now – try it in about 5-6 years when it will start to enter its drinking window
