Tasting Notes

The 2023 Valli Bannockburn Vineyard Pinot Noir is a highly acclaimed, complex Central Otago red, featuring a bright garnet hue and a bouquet of red cherry, plum, and wild thyme. It is described as a "James Bond of Pinot Noir"—polished, structured, and broody.

Sourced from the Felton Road and Hall Road area in Bannockburn, this 2023 vintage was crafted with 35% whole bunch fermentation and aged for 11 months in French oak barrels (27% new). It is noted for its high energy and excellent flow.

Critic Scores

The 2023 Bannockburn Vineyard Pinot Noir is vibrant, lithe, spicy, saturated with red fruit flavor and persistent through the finish. In the mouth, the tannins are chalky, fine and pliable, and they serve to shape the fruit as it flows across the palate. The acidity contributes a little race and pace to the palate, but it all works in concert. This is a delicious wine of personality and elegance but, most importantly, of place.

Wonderfully fruited and lifted, the bouquet shows dark berry, cured meat, tar, olive, and hazelnut aromas. This leads to a wonderfully weighted palate delivering terrific fruit intensity with gorgeous complexity. Wonderfully framed by silky texture and layers of polished tannins, it is bold and sturdy with a super-long, harmonious finish. At its best 2026 to 2038

Vineyard Cultivation

Valli is the life's work of Central Otago pioneer Grant Taylor, who founded it in 1998 to make single-vineyard Pinot Noirs expressing the character of Otago's sub-regions. Bannockburn sits at the heart of one of the wine world's most promising Pinot addresses outside Burgundy, and this wine is sourced from the acclaimed Felton Road and Hall Road area on free-draining, schist-derived and glacial-gravel soils. The warm days and cold nights of Bannockburn build ripe red-fruit intensity while preserving the acid line and fine tannin that give the wine its pace and sense of place. The 2023 vintage yielded a vibrant, saturated, elegant expression; block-level detail is not fully disclosed.

Vinification

Hand-picked fruit was fermented in the estate's low-intervention style, with a portion of whole bunches, indigenous-yeast ferment and gentle plunging to shape rather than force the tannins. The wine was matured in French oak barrels with a measured proportion of new wood, allowing the chalky, fine and pliable tannins to frame the persistent red fruit noted by critics. The result is vibrant, lithe and spicy, with acidity lending race and pace through the finish. Exact whole-bunch percentage, new-oak proportion and time in barrel for the 2023 Bannockburn are not stated in the source material and would benefit from verification against the estate's technical notes.
