98 Points Wine Orbit - 96 Points Erin Larkin

The wine has a bright garnet hue and aromas of plum, mulled spices, rosemary, peppercorn, and graphite, on the palate the wine has complex flavors of baking spices, dried florals, cedar, and dark red fruit. It is well-balanced with acidity and tannins, and it has a long, lingering finish.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 Valli Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir is an elegant, aromatic, and deeply concentrated Central Otago red, showcasing classic cool-climate, floral-infused black fruit and savoury herb notes. It features fine, silky, yet firm tannins, bright acidity, and a long finish, with ageing potential for over 20 years.

Critic Scores

Moderately deep crimson, lighter on the rim. The nose is immediately pleasing, with concentrated aromas of cherry, black raspberry, deep floral, undergrowth, and delicate spice. Medium-bodied, with aromas of red cherry and black raspberry entwined with tamarillo, unfolding black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg spices, undergrowth and hibiscus. Lacy, enticing acidity flows with good energy and precision. Finely woven, powdery tannins coated the mouth in satin and imparted deep fragrances that lingered. An exceptional vintage, this wine is a classic Gibbston Pinot Noir, seductive, harmonious, and profound, one for the long-term cellar. Match with stuffed pigeon and duck breast over the next 15+ years. Fermented with 25% whole bunch, aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 27% new oak. 13% alc. 19.5/20 pts (98 pts) Apr 2025 RRP $85

It’s totally seductive on the nose with stunning fruit purity and perfume, showing ripe cherry, floral, mushroom, thyme,
and toasted almond notes, followed by a finely flowing palate that’s wonderfully rounded and plump. Tannins are fine and beautifully infused, making it superbly structured with a sustained, refined finish. At its best 2026 to 2038

The 2023 Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir is fresh, juicy and texturally detailed, with chalky, supple tannins that fill the mouth and saline acidity that courses through the layers of floral, red-berry fruit. There is real drive and elegance here. It’s a superb wine, as all of these Valli Pinots tend to be.

Displaying really pristine aromas of red cherry and pomegranate fruit with only the faintest hint of dark plum. There is a some rose petal and dried thyme too. Bright and precise, the tannins are beautifully managed, layering across the palate but not dominating. A concentrated, intense pinot that manages to retain a lovely floral lift. A long savoury finish. Alcohol 13.00%. Drink from 2026-2034. 96 Points Tasted Nov 2024.

Vineyard Cultivation

Valli was established in 1998 by Grant Taylor, a pioneering Central Otago winemaker, and specialises in site-expressive, single-vineyard Pinot Noir from New Zealand's southernmost wine region. The Gibbston Vineyard sits in the cool, high and late-ripening Gibbston sub-region, where north-facing slopes, schist-derived soils and a long, slow growing season produce fragrant, structured Pinot Noir. Farming is meticulous and low-yielding, with the fruit hand-tended to preserve the delicate perfume and fine tannin that define Gibbston. The 2023 vintage is regarded as an exceptional Central Otago season, delivering ripe, pure fruit with lacy acidity and depth, described by critics as a classic Gibbston expression built for long-term cellaring of fifteen years or more.

Vinification

The 2023 Gibbston Pinot was hand-picked and fermented with roughly 25% whole bunches, the balance destemmed, using a cool pre-ferment soak and indigenous-yeast fermentation to build layered spice, floral and undergrowth complexity. Gentle handling and restrained extraction give the wine its fine, powdery, satin tannins and sense of drive. Following pressing, the wine was matured for around eleven months in French oak barrels, with about 27% new oak so that the wood supports rather than covers the red-berry and floral fruit. Malolactic conversion completed in barrel. Bottled at around 13% alcohol, the finished wine shows saline acidity, chalky texture and the elegance typical of Valli's single-vineyard Pinots.
