This premium Amarone is a masterful blend of Corvina, Rondinella, and Corvinone grapes, meticulously selected and dried to concentrate flavors, resulting in a rich and powerful wine with remarkable depth.

Named in honor of Girolamo Fracastoro (1478-1553), a celebrated doctor, philosopher, and poet from Incaffi near Lake Garda, this Riserva pays tribute to his literary contributions on wine and reflects the heritage and tradition of the region. The 2013 vintage showcases the unique terroir of Valpolicella Classico, known for its rolling hills and ideal microclimate that nurtures these indigenous grape varieties to full ripeness.

This Amarone Riserva captivates with intense aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, dried figs, and hints of spice and leather, balanced by velvety tannins and a long, lingering finish. The wine’s robust structure and elegant complexity make it a perfect companion for hearty dishes such as aged cheeses, game, and rich meats.

Critic Scores

Medium-bodied red with orangey-garnet tints. The nose is smoky, ashy and spicy, with an abundance of wild plants and stewed fruit. Very mature on the palate, in terms of aroma, structure, tannins and ageing. Superb.

Dark, bright, rich dark ruby. Very fruity on the nose, very open-hearted, accessible, floral and clear, with hints of juicy raspberries and lots of citrus fruit, fine mint on the finish. Noble and medium-bodied on the palate, clear fruit here too, brisk, with beautiful acidity, drinks very well. Further bottle ageing has done it good.

Vineyard Cultivation

Villabella's Fracastoro is a Riserva-level Amarone, indicating extended élevage (minimum five years before release) and fruit of superior ripeness. This 2013 release comes from select parcels within the Valpolicella Classico zone, where the producer applies rigorous vineyard selection. Corvina, Rondinella, and complementary varieties were harvested at peak ripeness and subjected to meticulous appassimento drying over autumn and winter months. The 2013 vintage presented ideal conditions: warm, dry weather during drying, ensuring effective concentration of flavours and phenolics. Villabella's traditional practices—old vines, conservative yields, hand-tending—underpin the quality required for Riserva designation.

Vinification

Dried grapes underwent careful destemming and fermentation in temperature-controlled conditions, with native yeasts driving a lengthy conversion that extracted the deep colour, high alcohol (typically 15–16%), and powerful flavour typical of Amarone. The wine then matured in large Slavonian oak casks for the extended period—five years minimum for Riserva—allowing the intense dried-fruit character, tannin development, and secondary oxidative notes to mature. Additional bottle maturation followed release, as the 2013 vintage further evolved. Minimal fining and no filtration preserved structural complexity.

About this Wine

Veneto

Veneto in the north east of Italy, is the 8th largest region in Italy in terms of land mass, and over 90,000 hectares are under vine, of which some 35,000 hectares are DOC, making Veneto the largest producer of DOC wines in Italy. Venetian viticulture dates back to the Roman times, but phylloxera and world wars saw large cooperatives come to the region taking over many smaller vineyards.

The region is protected from the harsh European climate by the Alps, in the north of Veneto, though the cool climate there is ideal for producing Garganega, the main variety in the white wine Soave. To the east, along the Adriatic coast the renowned Valpolicella, Amarone and Bardolino DOC reds are produced. Reds are often blended with multiple grapes although straight varietals like Cabernet Franc can be very enjoyable.

The plains of Piave produce vast quantities of wine, rather than necessarily producing the highest quality wines and up in the Conegliano hills to the north is home to the Prosecco variety, which is growing in popularity, seen as a bargain alternative to Champagne.
