Tasting Notes

Vina Almaviva 2024 is the living expression of a fabulous terroir in Chile’s renowned Maipo Valley, one of South America’s most celebrated regions for premium red wine. Created through the prestigious joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Bordeaux and Chilean producer Concha y Toro, Almaviva unites French winemaking heritage with the distinctive character of exceptional Chilean vineyards.

Elegant, powerful and beautifully structured, this Maipo Valley red wine reveals a refined profile of dark fruit, dried red fruit and spice. Dried herbal notes emerge through the midpalate, adding complexity and nuance to its layered expression. Freshness and depth provide balance, while a mineral finish extends with remarkable length and rich, polished flavour.

With its graceful structure, concentrated fruit and sophisticated finish, Almaviva 2024 is a distinguished example of fine Chilean wine and an exceptional addition to any premium wine collection. This release is available as an International On Demand pre-arrival offer through La Place de Bordeaux, with estimated dispatch from April 2027 onwards.

Critic Scores

The 2024 Almaviva shows subtle exuberance with its hallmark restrained sweetness, with good depth of complexity and generosity. A touch of cedar and tobacco with sweet currants, berries and subtlety. Round and medium- to full-bodied, with the depth of cabernet sauvignon marrying the sweet spices from the carmenere. Structured yet fine-grained and polished. Very long finish. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 24% carmenere, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Drink after 2027. - Zekun Shuai

An exceptional vintage of Almaviva, this is fragrant and savoury, with wonderful lift through the palate, fennel, anis, raspberry puree, a succulent and balanced vintage of this wine. Michel Friou winemaker, Manuel Louzada director, jointly owned by Rothschild, Concha y Toro. 70% new oak for ageing. - Jane Anson

The 2024 Almaviva ranks as the most impressive and definitive iteration of the wine I have tasted to date. The nose delivers a degree of nuance, refinement and complexity that other vintages have glimpsed but never fully attained, seamlessly fusing incense, pipe tobacco, sage, sweet red pepper and singed cedar aromas with impeccable harmony and a graceful overall nature. On the palate, a classically suave, gourmand mouthfeel is energized by an uncommon vibrancy, flowing into a reverberant, saturated finish that lingers with filigreed tannins and a strident core of graphite-laden minerality. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with about 25% Carmenère, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. - Matthew Luczy

Beautiful. Ethereal. Lifted and aromatically very precise despite the sense of subtle restraint. Cassis. Pink and green peppercorns. This is very pure and lifted. It’s radiant with lovely, very precise, floral notes. The aromatics of the Carménère and Cabernet Franc really sing and yet it is the Cabernet Sauvignon that provides the elegant, compact frame. A great advert both for the bond between them that is the terroir on which they grow and for the respect it is shown at Almaviva. 98. - Colin Hay

The 2024 Almaviva (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot) from Puente Alto was aged for 18 months in French oak, 76% new. It opens with a dark-fruited profile of blackberry and blueberry, layered with plum, balsamic notes, chutney-like spice, licorice and fine oak. The warm vintage reinforces this darker, riper aromatic register, in line with the estate's mature style. On the palate, Puente Alto's gravel soils and Andean setting play a defining role, delivering rounded, polished tannins and textural finesse. Broad and slightly indulgent, the wine shows fine, lightly plush yet still reactive tannins, as it was recently bottled, and sustains the finish with delicate fruit. Here, vintage and house style align, resulting in a poised and expressive 2024. - Joaquin Hidalgo
