Tasting Notes

Baettig is the family project of winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig (Errázuriz) and Carlos de Carlos in Traiguén, some 600 kilometers south of Chile. They planted 15.4 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on volcanic soils in 2013 and the first wines are hitting the Ontario market for the first time now.

This Selección de Parcelas was made with Pinot Noir grapes grown in Malleco, in the appellation of Traiguén. Malleco is a land of wild forests, beautiful lakes, active volcanoes and abundant rain in the southern Chilean region of La Araucanía. The ancient volcanic soils of this area are composed of pyroclastic volcanic breccia of andesite lava, with clay/loam texture. The abundant rainfall throughout the year allows Baettig to practice a dry-farming viticulture.

The Pinot Noir comes exclusively from a selection of the Traiguén and Llaima parcels, which deliver elegant and austere wines with strong ageing potential. The name Los Primos (The Cousins), refers to the closeness of style and quality of the vineyard parcels that give rise to this wine.

Pouring ruby red in the glass, this Pinot showcases refined aromas of fresh cherries and wild strawberries, with a lively bouquet of rose hip, lavender and notes of spiced orange peel and dried herbs. The palate is equally as complex, with red berry fruits supported by juicy acidity and firm but approachable tannins. Flavours of graphite unfold on the lengthy finish, owing the volcanic soils the grapes were grown in. With its deep flavours and great structure, this wine will award cellaring-if you can be patient!

Being that Pinot Noir produces such a food-friendly wines, pairing options are endless. We recommend trying this with a mushroom-stuffed pork roulade or braised beef.

Critic Scores

There is iron savoriness and minerality that make this unique, with a Gevry-like grip and a structured profile. It brims with aromas of roasted spices, crushed shells, blood oranges and berries that extend to a tight, almost full-bodied palate supported by very firm tannins. 14 months in 300-liter oak barrels, of which 35% were new. Quite a structured pinot, with 18% whole clusters. 5,970 bottles made. Drink from 2027.

The 2023 Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Pinot Noir leads with an intense yet elegant nose of red and blue fruits, petrichor and orange rinds, leading to a soft, primary and precise palate that balances understated power with lively energy. The finish starts on a juicy, quenching, refreshing note before developing a fine-grained tannic grip with continued aeration. In contrast to the more savory 2022 bottling, I found this a bit more primary and fruit-driven, suggesting it will benefit from additional time in the cellar.

Vineyard Cultivation

Vinos Baettig is the family project of Francisco 'Pancho' Baettig, long the technical director at Errazuriz and Chile's 2019 Winemaker of the Year, with partner Carlos de Carlos. From 2013 they planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at Traiguen in the Malleco Valley, some 600 kilometres south of Santiago in rain-swept La Araucania. The ancient volcanic soils, andesitic breccia over clay-loam, and high year-round rainfall allow dry-farmed viticulture. 'Los Primos' (the cousins) is a selection of the closest-matched Traiguen and Llaima parcels, chosen for elegance and structure. The 2023 fruit gave a primary, fruit-driven wine with lively energy.

Vinification

The selected parcels were fermented with about 18 per cent whole clusters, adding grip and savoury lift to the pure red and blue fruit. The wine was matured for 14 months in 300-litre oak barrels, of which 35 per cent were new, building a structured, almost full-bodied frame with firm, fine-grained tannins and the iron-like, saline minerality that marks this cold-climate site. Around 5,970 bottles were made. Bright and precise, it balances understated power with freshness and is built to gain from further time in bottle.
