The Amelia Cabernet Merlot blend is one of the most bankable Cabernets in Victoria

Cult-favourite Cabernet from the outskirts of the Yarra Valley, this classic, elegant blend will evolve beautifully in the cellar.

It's a gorgeous example of a medium-bodied BDX blend, a perfect cellaring option with the fruit concentration, balance and structure to evolve for decades in the bottle.

Tasting Notes

A large proportion of the grapes for this wine come from the original 1963 plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines. The remainder is from the more recently planted—1989—Petit Verdot. Whilst the proportions differ every year, depending on fruit set and cropping levels, roughly speaking, the breakdown is as follows: 65% Cabernet sauvignon, 30% Cabernet franc and Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. The addition of Petit Verdot grapes in the 1990s gave the wine a backbone of tannin and natural acidity. With its long growing season, Petit Verdot grapes are the last to be harvested, usually in mid-April.

The 2023 Amelia Cabernet Merlot blend is a classic from this label. Approachable now with its complex mix of black berries, generous weight and those lovely long tannins that we get from the low yielding 60 plus year old vines.

Critic Scores

Cabernet as drawn by MC Escher, exquisitely etched, scrawling volumes into the tiny details. Mulberry and cassis, fennel seed and bay leaf, violets pressed between dusty tissue paper. A diaphanous sheath of fruit deftly draped over a compact and composed framework. Lovely fine acid line and microfine tannins that sit effortlessly in the wine.

A 45/45/10% cabernet sauvignon/merlot and cabernet franc/petit verdot blend with the majority coming off the original dry-grown 1963 plantings. A fabulous, bright crimson/purple. A touch riper and richer than the '22. There's a sumptuous core of dark fruits, violets, cedar and fresh pencil shavings on the nose. It's just as enticing on the perfectly pitched, medium bodied, elegant and very persistent palate. Everything is in place for a long and productive life!

Blackcurrant, raspberry, redcurrant, lots of pencils, a dusty spicy almost peppery top note, roast red capsicum, some menthol, violets too. It’s medium-bodied, very tight with cool glassy acidity, again those pencils and dark tobacco, a fine grainy grip to tannin, with a crunchy cranberry finish of excellent length. It’s a vintage where the Cabernet Franc perfume and brightness seems to ride quite high, and I like that sort of thing very much. And the pencils. I love pencils in my Cabernets. It’s finely-etched and classic in its Yarra Valley restraint. I reckon it’s tops.

Vineyard Cultivation

Wantirna Estate was founded by Reg Egan, who planted his first vines in 1963 at Wantirna South, on the western fringe of the Yarra Valley. The Amelia comes largely from those original 1963 dry-grown plantings of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, with petit verdot added from 1989 plantings to lend backbone of tannin and natural acidity. The long-season petit verdot is the last fruit picked, usually in mid-April. The 2023 Yarra Valley season favoured a cool, restrained and elegant style; the resulting blend is a classic medium-bodied Bordeaux blend built for long cellaring.

Vinification

The component varieties were hand-picked and fermented separately before blending, the 2023 running to roughly equal parts cabernet sauvignon and merlot/cabernet franc with a small portion of petit verdot. The wine was matured in French oak to frame, rather than dominate, the fruit, preserving the estate's trademark elegance: fine acid line, microfine tannins and a persistent, medium-bodied palate of mulberry, cassis, cedar and violet, structured to evolve for decades.

About this Wine

Wantirna Estate

Wantirna Estate Vineyard is located just outside of Melbourne, Victoria in a town of the same name. Founded by Reg and Bertina Egan in 1963, Wantirna Estate was the first of the new generation vineyards planted outside the region of the Yarra Valley. This was a new adventure for Reg, a Melbourne lawyer who in 1984, gave up his law practice to focus solely on viticulture and winemaking. After a vintage in Burgundy, Reg and Bertina's daughter Maryann Egan studied oenology at Charles Sturt University and is currently the head winemaker in addition to being an accomplished wine writer. Early plantings included a mixed bag of Italian and Spanish varieties, however in the 1970s, the land was replanted to focus on more familiar grape varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for single vineyard wines and Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot for Bordeaux blends. Much of the current Cabernets and Merlot are part of the original 1963 plantings.
